The Sukhoi Su-11 ( Russian Сухой Су-11 , also Project LK ) was the prototype of a Soviet fighter and front-bomb aircraft from the second half of the 1940s. It should not be confused with the later mass-produced interceptor of the same name .

history

The Su-11 was developed in 1947 by Pawel Suchoi as the successor to the Su-9 (K) . The fuselage with the two-wheel nose landing gear as well as the pressurized cabin, the ejection seat, the braking parachute, the air brakes and the U-5 starter missiles with 11.3 kN each (burning time 8 s) were taken over from it. New were the 0.8 m² wing area of the trapezoid wing and the drives. If the Su-9 was still equipped with two RD-10 engines, a replica of the German Jumo 004 , the Su-11 received two Ljulka TR-1s . The TR-1 was the first jet engine developed in the Soviet Union. It was designed by Archip Ljulka .

Conceptually, the Su-11 was a cantilever low- wing aircraft in all-metal half-shell construction with an oval fuselage cross-section and also cantilevered normal tail unit. The pilot was protected by a 12 to 15 mm thick steel plate on the rear seat. The main landing gear wheels were drawn into the fuselage on both sides. As armament, the model received two 23-mm cannons and a 37-, optionally 45-mm cannon in the fuselage bow. For the intended role as a fighter-bomber, the Su-11 should carry two 250-kg or two 500-kg FAB (high-explosive bombs) at underwing stations.

Testing began in the second half of 1947 and revealed some shortcomings. Better performance than with the Su-9 was achieved, but the main problem was the immature and not faultlessly working engines. Suchoi therefore decided to install two RD-500 drives. The resulting aircraft was named Su-13 (KD) . It was no longer flown, however, because the MiG-15 and Il-28 models tested around the same time for the role of fighter or front bomber already took into account the experience gained in high-speed flight and were therefore more promising. The Sukhoi design office was also dissolved quite arbitrarily in November 1949, so that testing could no longer take place. The project was discontinued before the first flight.
