The station was opened during the First World War on July 11, 1917, when the Schöllenenbahn started operating , initially only in summer. Year-round operation began in 1925 and the main line of the Furka-Oberalp Railway from Disentis to Brig was opened continuously in the following year .

At the station there is a plaque in honor of Ludwig Danioth , who fought for the construction of the Furka Base Tunnel as President of the Furka-Oberalp-Bahn and Council of States of the Canton Uri .

The new pedestrian underpass was opened on the east side of the station when the Gütsch-Express gondola lift in the ski arena went into operation at the end of 2017. This connects the future main building on the north side with the valley station of the gondola and the village on the south side of the train station.

business

The station is of regional trains of the MGB and the in cooperation with the Rhaetian Railway operated Glacier Express operated. It also serves as a transfer point to the PostBus lines over the Gotthard, Furka and Grimsel passes and to the Andermatt village bus, which operates in winter.

MGB

During the winter season, additional trains marked as "sports trains" run between Andermatt and the Oberalp Pass "in good weather and slope conditions".

Bus operation

In summer, post bus lines run from the station square over the Gotthard Pass to Airolo , over the Furka Pass to Oberwald and via Göschenen and Wassen over the Susten Pass to Meiringen . Postbuses also serve the station on two-, three- and four-pass trips in the region.

In winter, two buses run every half hour in the municipality of Andermatt and to Hospental . The offer is sponsored and is therefore free of charge for all passengers. Since the end of 2016, a night bus from Andermatt to Realp has also been running on Friday and Saturday nights . Also in winter, on selected days, primarily on weekends and during school holidays, an express bus run by Auto AG Uri runs between Flüelen and Andermatt. The bus is mainly used by skiers, which is why it goes to Andermatt in the morning and back to the Unterland in the evening:

expansion

The station is currently undergoing major renovation and expansion in connection with the expansion of the ski arena . A new main building, called Andermatt Central , with commercial space, offices and apartments is being built on the north side of the station . A pedestrian underpass, which connects the new main building and the platforms with the south side of the train station and the valley station of the Gütsch-Express gondola , has already been built. In addition, the platforms are completely covered. The existing pedestrian underpass will then be removed.
