The Davos Platz station of the Rhaetian Railway is one of eight stops in the Davos community . It was originally the terminus of the Landquart-Davos Railway , which opened in 1890, and became a through station with the construction of the railway line to Filisur in 1909 .

history

The history of the station is inextricably linked with the Landquart – Davos railway line. Willem Jan Holsboer's original idea was not a local railway , but the Scalettabahn , the route of which was to continue from Davos to Chiavenna . This plan provided for a central station for Davos in the area of the English quarter near Schiabach. However, as the canton preferred the Albula line , the Scalettabahn project could no longer be implemented. The railway project had to be reworked accordingly. The interests of the two health resorts Davos Dorf and Davos Platz also opposed the project of a central train station. As a result, two stations (Davos Dorf and Davos Platz) were created instead of a central train station. As the terminus of a railway line, the station had to be planned accordingly extensively.

Furnishing

In line with its function as the terminus of a line, the track systems are extensive, even if the traffic volume means that the parking systems are rather small and short. Initially there was a two-tier wagon hall and a two-tier locomotive depot with a turntable .

Today the public facility comprises three platform tracks (tracks 1–3). These are the main platform at the reception building and the central platform, which is accessible through an underpass, with platform edges on both sides. The train station meets the current requirements of the Disability Act.

building

In 1890 the station was given a provisional station building which, after the final building went into operation, served as a residential building and was demolished in 1949.

The definitive station building was probably built according to Gaudenz Issler's plans and was completed in mid-July 1891. With a view to the commissioning of the line to Filisur, the building was rebuilt inside in 1908 and provided with central heating. In 1922, the platform and the station building were significantly modified according to the plans of the RhB structural engineering office under the direction of Rudolf Sievi. The construction company was the Arosa- based chalet factory. Between 1947 and 1949, a new building was built according to plans by Rudolf Gaberel under the direction of chief engineer Hans Conrad . The station building with its typical Davos flat roof is a category B cultural monument under cantonal monument protection .

The goods shed built in 1890 has been preserved.

Operational

The two routes are still operated independently today, and you usually had to change trains in Davos Platz. The main flow of traffic was always in the direction of Landquart , while the line to Filisur remained a branch line. Today (2016 timetable) there is no direct connection between the two routes.

On the route to Landquart, there is currently an hourly direct train that runs during the day in Prättigau as Regional Express (RE). In the evening it stops as a regional train at all stops. During the day there is a slightly shifted half-hourly service between Davos Platz and Klosters Platz, but some of the half-hourly push-in trains run only seasonally. In Klosters, these RE trains have a connection to a regional express to Landquart or Scuol-Tarasp .

On the route to Filisur, a single shuttle train set has been commuting every hour for several years , which is geared towards the Albula trains crossing in Filisur. In addition, a single Bernina Express runs from Davos Platz to Tirano in summer .

Former traffic

The first summer timetable in 1890 included four pairs of trains from Landquart to Davos.

There were 1982 also coaches the " Glacier Express " which plied from Davos Platz via Landquart / Chur. The Glacier Express, which was later converted into an independent train, ran until 2013.

The “Heidiland Bernina Express”, which was first introduced in the summer of 1995, has been the only day train in recent years to operate the Klosters – Davos – Filisur route. In 2000 it was renamed “Heidi Express”. This train was discontinued in 2005, shortened to the Davos Platz – Tirano route and marketed again as the “Bernina Express”.
