The BB Ge 4/4 82 and RhB Ge 4/4 182 are Swiss direct current locomotives , which were built in 1928 for the then independent Bernina Railway and which changed ownership after the Rhaetian Railway took over the line . Due to the external similarity to the Ge 6/6 I type machines of the Rhaetian Railway and Ce 6/8 II and III of the Swiss Federal Railways , known as crocodile locomotives , this machine is also known as the crocodile of the Bernina Railway or the Bernina crocodile .

history

The machine was delivered to the Bernina Railway (BB) on March 10, 1928 to be used on the narrow-gauge route from St. Moritz via Pontresina , the Bernina Pass and Poschiavo to Tirano in Italy . There it was given the road number 82. After the independent company was taken over by the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) in 1944, the locomotive, along with the rest of the BB vehicles, also became their property.

The locomotive was rebuilt in 1946; their snow plow stems have been converted into normal stems. As a result of the changed weight distribution, the originally eccentrically arranged pivot pins also had to be moved to the center of the bogies. This made the locomotive 2 t lighter and 40 cm shorter. In 1953 and 1962 the locomotive was badly damaged in accidents, but was rebuilt each time. The machine was renumbered from 82 to 182 in 1961 to free up the area 51-99 for tractors. In 1977 the locomotive was scrapped and went to the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne , where it remained until 1981.

In 1984 she was bought by a French private citizen, resp. his company, bought and parked on a track of the French meter - gauge railway St.Georges-de-Commiers - La-Mure (SGLM). Contrary to some sources, the SGLM did not take over the locomotive. After the private person's company got into financial difficulties and the condition of the locomotive parked outside deteriorated noticeably and threatened to be demolished, action was called for. This was a difficult legal venture as the locomotive had already fallen into bankruptcy. Thanks to the committed efforts of a knowledgeable Frenchman (Eric Béttega) and the Swiss Patrick Belloncle, the locomotive was acquired by Club 1889 - a Graubünden railway club - and transported back to Switzerland in 1999 by its Associazione 182 group in order to use it again as a nostalgic vehicle on the Bernina Railway after a restoration. After the overhaul, the first self-operated test drive took place on May 28, 2010. The Bernina crocodile has been officially back in operation since June 2010 and is used for special museum trips on the Bernina route.
