The RhB Ge 4/4 II is an electric locomotive of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) in Switzerland with the type designation Ge 4/4 .

history

Two locomotives of the Ge 4/4 II series in Klosters. On the right locomotive 630 (Trun) in the state before the renovation, behind it the already converted 613 (Domat / Ems) with the angular headlights and a changed position of the vehicle number on the front.

The 23 locomotives with the numbers 611 to 633 were put into service in 1973 (first series) and 1984 (second series). The last locomotive of the second series with the name Zuoz and number 633 was not delivered until 1985. They replaced the Ge 6/6 I ( crocodiles ), which were becoming more and more prone to failure.

The external appearance of the locomotives supplied by SLM and BBC is reminiscent of the Re 4/4 II of the SBB . The electrical part differs significantly, however: controlled rectifiers ( phase control ) made up of thyristors and diodes supply the traction motors with wavy direct current . The technology of the time did not yet allow recuperation braking, which is why the vehicles are equipped with a resistance brake.

The Bo'Bo 'locomotives have a top speed of 90 km / h and weigh 50 tons . The hourly output is 1700  kW at 52 km / h and the starting tractive effort is 179 kN. The permissible trailer load is 185 t on an incline of 45 per thousand and 245 t on 35 per thousand, with double traction a maximum of 400 t.

The second series 621–633 was delivered in the red color scheme that has been in use since then, and the originally green 611–620 were later adjusted. From 1999 onwards, some machines received new rectangular headlights for revisions , but otherwise remained unchanged. Between 2004 and 2008, all 23 locomotives were comprehensively modernized as part of a refit program , with modern computer-aided control technology replacing the analog control electronics.

Since their delivery, the locomotives have been in use on the entire main network in front of passenger and freight trains , and since 1997 also on the Arosa Railway . The machines can run in double traction with multiple controls. The BDt 1751–1758 series control cars acquired in 1999 can be used to form shuttle trains .

The locomotives are named after locations along the RhB network in Graubünden . The names are in white letters on the right and left side in the upper area of the vehicle, the road numbers 611–633 on the two front sides, as well as on the lower side. In addition to the name, each locomotive bears the coat of arms of the sponsoring community. The four locomotives with the locomotive numbers 612, 619, 627 and 632 were the last machines to be modernized in 2008.

modernization

In 2016, the RhB began modernizing the locomotives again, starting with No. 625. All locomotives will be equipped with the on-board components for the new ZSI 127 train protection system. The locomotives of the second series 621–633 will also receive a new dual braking system, which is required to haul the new Albula articulated trains .
