As ABe 4/4 III , the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) designated the direct current electric multiple units with the road numbers 51 to 56 that were acquired in 1988 and 1990 . The tow cars are used on the Bernina Railway , where they helped to cope with the increase in traffic and also pushed the aging ABe 4/4 I into subordinate services.
history
By SLM and ABB railcars delivered in two series of three piece at the time were the first RhB locomotives in inverter technology with three-phase - asynchronous motors . In addition, they were among the world's first direct current traction vehicles with GTO thyristors . They are 65 km / h fast, weigh 47 tons and, with an hourly output of 1016 kW, were the RhB's most powerful DC railcars on delivery . Your trailer load at a gradient of 70 per thousand is 90 or 95 tonnes, provided there are only four-axle vehicles on the train. They have twelve seats in first and 16 in second class . Thanks to multiple controls , they can drive with each other and also with the older ABe 4/4 II 41–49 and Gem 4/4 801–802 in double traction, which is widely used in daily operation. A double traction of two ABe 4/4 III theoretically has a power reserve for the transport of a further 50 tonnes, since the maximum tow hook load of 140 tonnes on the Bernina Railway must not be exceeded.

Coloring
For the railcars, the RhB chose a paint scheme that corresponds to the Ge 4/4 I / II / III locomotives. The car body was dark brown below a low-lying decorative line . A large Graubünden coat of arms is emblazoned on each face. This painting scheme was subsequently also used for the ABe 4/4 II and the Gem 4/4. In the course of refit measures and repainting of the vehicles, the color scheme was adapted to the current RhB design. The vehicles now have a gray body in the lower area instead of a brown one. In 2007, the railcars received advertising on the side panels for a certain period of time. At the end of 2015, all vehicles were red again and painted and lettered in the current design.
