The Ge 6/6 II is a heavy electric locomotive of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) . The six-axle machines ( axle formula Bo'Bo'Bo ') are mostly used in freight train services.

history

prehistory

In the 1950s , the traffic on the RhB grew so strongly that the existing " crocodiles " Ge 6/6 I and Ge 4/4 I were no longer sufficient. The construction of the power station in Bergell ( Albigna dam ), which began in 1958 and was managed by the city of Zurich's power station, required up to 1,000 tons of cement per day , which had to be transported from Untervaz to the Engadin . For this, the RhB took a train that has a towing capacity of 250 tons to 35  ramps of the Albula line could draw.

Commissioning

The two locomotives of the first series (numbers 701 and 702) were delivered by SLM , BBC and MFO in 1958 at a unit price of 230,000 francs , the successors (numbers 703 to 707, put into service in 1965 ) were then 200,000 francs more expensive.

construction

Delivery condition

Technically, the machines correspond to the state of the art at the time: (low-voltage) tap changers and single-phase series motors . The two outer bogies and the traction motors can be exchanged with the Ge 4/4 I. The box joint between the two halves of the locomotive only allows vertical movements. The Ge 6/6 II have a top speed of 80 km / h and weigh 65 tons, they produce 1776 kW at 46 km / h. The permissible trailer load is 205 t on a 45 ‰ gradient and 280 t on 35 ‰.

Conversions

The first two locomotives still had transition doors on the fronts. These were sealed in 1968/69, but the adjustment to the second series (with two instead of three front windows) did not take place until the end of the 1980s. In 1985 the repainting began from green to red, and in 1998 the old pantographs were replaced by modern single-arm pantographs .

After the completion of the Bergell power plants, the 700 series were mainly used in front of express trains on the Albula line. Since the Ge 4/4 III, which went into service in 1993, took over these tasks, the Ge 6/6 II can mainly be found in front of freight trains on the entire main network (excluding the Arosa line ), but they can still be seen in front of passenger trains .

Locomotive 701 bears the name of the Roman province of Raetia , which has been preserved to this day as a synonym for Graubünden , locomotive 702 the Latin name Curia of the canton capital Chur . The remaining vehicles 703-707 are named after the larger Graubünden communities that are the endpoints of the route on the main network. In addition to the name, each locomotive also has the company number in white and the coat of arms of the sponsoring community (the coat of arms of the canton for locomotive 701).

On November 22, 2011, locomotive 703 in the Rueun station was badly damaged in the front area in a train accident. Her freight train hit a train waiting in the station (freight wagon with shunting tractor).
