The ABe 4/16 are four-part electric multiple units , of which the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) has ordered a total of 56 units from Stadler Rail . They have been used by the RhB on a scheduled basis since 2020. The roll-out took place on April 15, 2019 at Stadler's Altenrhein plant . The first unit was delivered to Landquart on June 27, 2019 and then subjected to various tests. The RhB names the trains "Capricorn" after the Graubünden heraldic animal, the ibex. The name was determined in a competition.

history

On April 4, 2015, the RhB launched a tender for 27 RTZ wing trains. The name wing train was chosen because the trains are supposed to run in the Prättigau and Engadin and are "winged" in Klosters, that is, divided into two train sections or brought together again. Even then, an option of 19 additional trains was planned, which were then re-ordered at the end of 2016. The originally advertised 27 units had been ordered only 6 months earlier. With the adoption of the new Strategy 2030, the canton of Graubünden has given the RhB the green light to purchase a further 20 Capricorn multiple units, increasing the number to 56 units.

commitment

The trains were designed primarily for the main network. The main area of use will be the Landquart – Davos (–Filisur), Landquart – Scuol, Landquart – St. Moritz, Pontresina – Scuol and Chur – Disentis. Use on the Chur S-Bahn is also planned. Several test drives were carried out on the Chur – Arosa line, but the multiple units are not supposed to run on this line in scheduled traffic. On June 17, 2020, multiple unit 3111 was the first to go into scheduled service. It operates on the Landquart – Davos – Filisur line.

construction

The four-part multiple unit consists of a multiple unit, two intermediate cars and a control car. The train has 35 seats in first and 129 in second class. There are thus 164 places in total. Compared to ABe 4/16 3101-3105, the railcar only contains second-class seats. From the compartment behind the driver's cab there is again a pane of glass through which one can see into the driver's cab. The railcar is the only vehicle that is not low-floor.

The two intermediate cars are also purely second-class cars. In them there is a multifunctional compartment as well as the handicapped accessible toilet as well as another, not handicapped accessible.

The control car is purely a first-class car. In the control car, too, travelers have the opportunity to look over the shoulder of the engine driver through the window.

business

The units have automatic couplers at the ends of the driver’s cab and thus enable additional multiple units to be connected and disconnected quickly. The wings should then be used primarily in the Prättigau. In operation, up to four units can be coupled and controlled together, resulting in a 300-meter-long train with a capacity of 688 seats. It is not yet known when the wing pull concept will be used.
