As ABe 4/4 II are used in the Rhätischen web (RhB) on the Berninabahn used electric railcar with numbers 41 to 49 ( motrice quaranta ), respectively.

The vehicles were delivered in two series: Numbers 41–46 in 1964/1965, the three remaining in 1972. The SWS was responsible for the mechanical part . The electrical equipment of the SAAS and BBC corresponds to the technology that has been used in DC railways for decades: contactor control and series motors . These railcars were the first new locomotives , which had obtained the RhB since the merger in 1943 with the Bernina Railway for these electrified with direct current route.

The railcars are 65 km / h fast, weigh 41 to 43 tons and produce 680 kW . The trailer load is 70 t, which means that two railcars together can carry the maximum drawbar load. The subsequent series 47-49 differ only in their 35 cm longer length and a different type of bogie . The vehicles painted in red have not seen any significant changes since they were commissioned. They have 12 seats in first and 24 in second class .

The terminal voltage of the motors is 500 volts. Every two traction motors are normally connected in series, when starting all four motors are in series. Four shunt stages and the full field stage allow the speed to be regulated in a wide speed range in an economical manner. The built-in multiple control enabled double traction with each other, with the Gem 4/4 801–802 twin- powered locomotives and also with the more recent ABe 4/4 III 51–56 converter railcars . In addition, when used together with an electric Xrotet 9218-19 snow blower , the railcars can be operated remotely from the driver's cab of the blower.

After the end of the 2010 summer season and the delivery of eight Allegra multiple units , the RhB canceled the ABe 4/4 II. 41, 42 and 45 were transferred for demolition at the beginning of November 2010, 43 and 44 followed in mid-December. Two vehicles of the second series, however, continue to be used as service railcars (instead of the Xe 4/4 9922-24 ).

Coloring

Although the railcars have always been painted red, their appearance has evolved over the years in accordance with the RhB standards. The ABe 41–46 still had chrome trim strips upon delivery, the ABe 47–49 were already delivered with painted trim strips. These were initially golden, later white. The name of the railway was still attached to all railcars as the abbreviation RhB. From 1973 the then new logo was attached, and from 1983 the name of the railway was written out in one of the three official languages next to it. The fonts for the technical labels also changed over the years. As the last change from 1988, as with the ABe 4/4 III, the decorative stripe was set lower and the box underneath was designed in dark gray "locomotive-like".
