The Ge 2/4 is a light electric locomotive series of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) .
history
In 1913 the RhB procured seven copies with the numbers 201 to 207 for the newly built Bever – Scuol – Tarasp railway in the Lower Engadine, which was electrified from the start . The 8.7 m long locomotives with rod drive reached 45 km / h and had an output of 228 kW . They weighed 36.7 t . The mechanical part was supplied by the Schweizerische Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik (SLM), while BBC produced the electrical components. Repulsion motors, which are characterized by a high starting torque and smooth start-up, were used for the drive .
Between 1943 and 1946, three machines were converted into shunting locomotives with a central driver's cab . They were given the numbers Gea 2/4 211 as well as Ge 2/4 212 and 213, the installation of new high-speed single-phase motors reduced the operating weight to 33.0 t and the top speed could be increased to 55 km / h. For the shunting service in Chur, locomotive 211 was also given an accumulator so that it could operate the tracks of the Arosa Railway that were electrified with direct current. In 1966 the accumulator was replaced by a diesel generator group and the locomotive was redesignated as Gem 2/4 211. The last copy (Ge 2/4 212) has meanwhile been restored to its original condition in the 1940s and given to the " chemin de fer du Kaeserberg " foundation , which set up the locomotive in front of its model railway in Granges-Paccot near Freiburg in Üechtland .
In 1945 and 1946 two more locomotives were rebuilt: The machines redrawn as Ge 2/4 221 and 222 were not changed externally, but they were given a more powerful, high-speed single-phase motor instead of the Déri motor. This reduced their weight to 30.0 t, the output increased to 450 kW and the top speed to 55 km / h. In addition to their traditional service in the Engadine, they also performed pre-tensioning services for the Ge 4/4 I on the Albula Railway during the season . The Ge 2/4 222 has been preserved to this day; it is used as a museum locomotive at the RhB and is based in Landquart .
The two unmodified machines with the numbers 205 and 207 are still preserved today. Until November 2007, locomotive 205 stood as a monument and object for engine measurements for the students in front of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur , owned by the Canton of Zurich via the school. The 205 locomotive was then to become part of the Albula Railway Museum. In April 2014, the Club 1889 decided to return the locomotive to Graubünden . The locomotive was outside in Arth-Goldau until May 2015 . She has been back on RhB tracks since May 8, 2015. Locomotive 207, which is the only one in the series to remain in its original condition, is on display in the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne .
