The RhB ABe 4/16  are four-part electric multiple units , of which the  Rhaetian Railway (RhB)  has ordered a total of five from Stadler Rail . They have been used in passenger transport since 2013. The multiple units, referred to by the RhB as “ALLEGRA trunk network multiple units (STZ)”, are derived from the RhB ABe 8/12 series (RhB designation: “ALLEGRA two-voltage multiple units (ZTZ)”), which was also developed and built by Stadler Rail were. In contrast to the ABe 8/12, which are used as traction vehicles in front of entire train compositions, the ABe 4/16 were procured for the agglomeration traffic around Chur to replace the aging Be 4/4 . In contrast to ABe 8/12, one railcar is sufficient for these operations, the second end car of a unit is a control car .

Production and commissioning

Originally planned for 2011, the production and especially the commissioning have dragged on. In January 2013, test drives were made with the 3101 in passenger service for one month. At the end of July 2013, the vehicles 3101, 3103 and 3104 received from the BAV an operating permit limited to January 2014 for the so-called upgrading operation. During this time, all tests had to be completed for definitive approval. Since then, all five trains have been in scheduled operation.

development

The trains were developed by Stadler Altenrhein . Since at the same time the DOSTO for SBB and Westbahn claimed the capacity in the Altenrhein plant, the RhB ABe 4/16 were built at Stadler Winterthur .

Commissioning

The commissioning of the trains was carried out at different locations for reasons of space. In addition to the main RhB workshop in Landquart, commissioning was also carried out in Samedan and Brig Glisergrund at MGB . The latter is remarkable because the RhB did not want to provide Stadler with any space on its infrastructure. For the last two trains delivered (3102 and 3105), parts of the final assembly and commissioning were carried out in Brig Glisergrund. The trains were then transferred to the RhB network and parked at various locations. The siding on the former Mayr-Melnhof large sawmill in Domat / Ems and the Reichenau-Tamins train station were used as storage locations .
