The Ge 6/6 I is an electric locomotive series of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) . Because of its shape and construction - they resemble the SBB - crocodiles of the Gotthard Bahn - which are C'C ' -Lokomotiven of railway friends also Rhaetisches crocodile called RhB internally is CC , the common name.
In 1921 the RhB procured six machines with the designation Ge 6/6 401 to 406. This acquisition was necessary after the electrification of the Albula Railway in 1919. The start of electrical operation on the Landquart – Davos line also required new locomotives that were more powerful than the Ge 2/4 and Ge 4/6 that were previously available . The RhB specifications therefore stipulated that the locomotives should transport a trailer load of 200 t on a 35 ‰ gradient and 150 t on a 45 ‰ gradient, each at 30 km / h. Delivery companies were SLM , BBC and MFO . By 1929 the RhB put a total of 15 units into service, namely after the first delivery in 1921 in 1922 the 407 to 410, in 1925 the 411 and 412 and in 1929 the Ge 6/6 I 413 to 415. With these new vehicles, the Society will finally replace the steam locomotives on the main network . From then on, they hauled heavy, high-quality trains, including the Glacier Express .
After more than 50 years of service, it was not until 1974 that the first machine was scrapped due to an accident. As early as 1958, the newer locomotives of the Ge 6/6 II series slowly pushed the crocodiles into less demanding services. The Ge 4/4 II delivered from 1973 onwards considerably accelerated this process, so that in 1984 six locomotives were scrapped. After the Ge 6/6 I 411 was shut down after an accident in June 2001 - it is now in the Deutsches Museum in Munich - only numbers 414 and 415 are operational. They are based in Landquart and Samedan . Locomotive 412 was painted dark blue in 2006, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Glacier Express , to match the Alpine Pullmann Classic , but was cannibalized and scrapped in 2008 after a gearbox damage.
The Ge 6/6 I 407 is in Bergün in front of the Albula Railway Museum and has been equipped with a driving simulator.
The Ge 6/6 I are 13.3 m long and weigh 66 t . Their power reaches 794 kW , whereby they can develop a top speed of 55 km / h.
The 15 locomotives with the numbers 401-415 that were put into service had and still do not have names. The list below shows the year of commissioning and the whereabouts of the vehicle. Six vehicles are still there, two of which are still in service as operational locomotives on the Rhaetian Railway. Nine locomotives have been scrapped so far: No. 401 after an accident in 1975, six more followed after the delivery of the second series of the Ge 4/4 II in 1984. The last machines for the time being were 413 and 412 in 1996 and 2008 Gearbox damage cannibalized as a spare part donor and then scrapped.
