The Ge 4/6 is a series of six-axle electric locomotives operated by the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). They each have four drive axles driven by coupling rods and two running axles.
history
When the Samedan – Scuol railway was opened in 1913, the Rhaetian Railway needed a number of powerful electric locomotives. Since the alternating current system used there was still in its infancy, a number of electrical companies were commissioned to build the locomotives in order to find the ideal design. The mechanical part of all locomotives was manufactured by the Schweizerische Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik (SLM).
The first locomotive to arrive in Graubünden was No. 351 with electrical equipment from Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon (MFO), making it the RhB's first electric locomotive. A structurally identical sister locomotive with the number 352 followed in February 1913. The third locomotive followed in 1913, the number 391, which was built by SLM and AEG . As the last locomotive for the time being , No. 301, equipped by the BBC , was put into operation in June 1913. In 1918 the RhB took over another locomotive with the number 302, which had been built by the BBC in 1914 for its own account as an exhibit.
In the meantime, the test drives had shown that the design of the MFO was best suited to the needs of the RhB, so a series of three slightly reinforced locomotives with the numbers 353 to 355 was commissioned.
Use and scrapping
The First World War made new acquisitions impossible, so that no more Ge 4/6 were built. In 1921 reached more electric locomotives RhB, but now in the form of more powerful Ge 6/6 I . The Ge 4/6 were subsequently used in light and medium-sized passenger and freight traffic on the entire main network . The number 301 was the first locomotive to retire from active service in 1966; it was used as a spare parts donor and scrapped in 1971, the Ge 4/6 No. 302 followed five years later. The delivery of the first Ge 4/4 II in 1973 meant the end of the 351 and 352 locomotives, the 354 and 355 locomotives were scrapped in 1982 and 1984, respectively, while the no. 353 was retained as a museum vehicle. The AEG locomotive 391 was retired in 1973, but remained with the RhB until 1980. It was returned to the AEG and can be viewed today in the German Museum of Technology in Berlin .
The museum locomotive 353, which celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2004, is still in regular use with museum trains.
