Made in china
Made in China: Young Art and Fresh Film From Beijing is a film and art festival that takes place once a year at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin-Mitte and offers a platform for young Chinese artists and filmmakers. "Made in China" opened for the first time in August 2006.
Conception of the exhibition
In the 2006 exhibition, the works of art were not shown in an exhibition room, but at various stations around Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. With the help of a map, visitors were able to set out on a course that led them to selected locations on, around and under the square. The works of the artists were specifically selected in correspondence with the locations. For example, a series of posters by the artist duo TAMEN could be seen in the underground station on the U2 line . Paintings, woodcuts, photographs as well as installation and video art were shown in the exhibition.
Film series
Associated with the art exhibition is a series of films that will be shown in the Babylon cinema (Berlin-Mitte). It concentrates on films that were shot with a low film budget and that have not yet been shown, or only to a limited extent, nationally and internationally. The films that were selected in 2006 were mostly shot with DV cameras and in a sense represent the country's DV movement. The main focus of most of the films can be identified as the social and thus individual upheavals and reorientations.
BZ scandal
The festival hit the headlines when the daily Berliner Zeitung complained about the allegedly violent content of the poster series in the subway station. The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), which acted as the official sponsor of the festival, then decided to take down the posters. The approach taken by the BZ met with a largely lack of understanding among visitors to the festival and among critics.
