The BDe 4/4 II were specially designed for the SBB route from Geneva to the Swiss-French border to La Plaine in the direction of Lyon. This was necessary because the line was operated under the SNCF power system of the Genève – Lyon line with 1,500 V direct current.
On delivery, the railcars were designated as BFe 4/4 II with the numbers 881–882. In 1961 the name was changed to BFe 4/4 II 1301–1302 and in 1963 finally to BDe 4/4 II .
The railcars mostly drove with light steel cars and a control car.
The railcars were underpowered and therefore prone to errors, so they often had to go back to the workshop. In order to be able to comply with the timetable operation, these had to be replaced by diesel locomotives due to the lack of alternatives, which is not typical for SBB. Since the SBB network is almost completely electrified, the SBB do not have many diesel locomotives, and since the few were often error-prone themselves ( Am 4/4 , ex. V 200 series ), sometimes they had to switch to four-current ( Ee 3/3 IV ) or diesel shunting locomotives ( Em 3/3 ) can be used. In summer this was not a problem, but in winter the lack of train heating made itself felt there. For this reason, in 1977 a light steel car (B 50 85 29-30 503) was fitted with a pantograph and a switching device for the train heating.
In 1994, the two BDe 4/4 II were replaced by five SBB Bem 550 , which were also equipped with a thermal auxiliary drive in order to be able to reach the workshops under AC contact lines. The BDe 4/4 II was retired in 1995 .
