The Em 3/3 is a diesel-electric shunting locomotive of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and the Sihl Valley-Zurich-Uetliberg-Bahn (SZU).
From 1959 to 1963, the SBB purchased the lightweight Em 3/3 shunting machines. They replaced the E 3/3 steam locomotives . The Sihltalbahn at the time joined the order with another locomotive, the Em 3/3 11 “Leu”. In terms of performance, the Em 3/3 belongs to the class of the Ee 3/3 standard electric shunting locomotives . The prototypes 18801 - 18806 are equipped with an eight-cylinder V diesel engine from SLM Winterthur . A more economical and lighter six-cylinder supercharged SLM diesel engine was installed in the series locomotives .
With the introduction of the UIC type designation , the SBB diesel locomotives were renamed Em 830. The twelve-digit UIC number is under the number plate of the SBB infrastructure locomotives.
With the advent of the SBB Am 843 diesel locomotive , the Em 3/3 are gradually taken out of service. The former SZU diesel locomotive Em 3/3 836 506 now belongs to the Club del San Gottardo in Mendrisio. The ex SBB Em 3/3 18822 is at the Draisinen Sammlung Fricktal association in Koblenz. The ex SBB Em 3/3 18814 belongs to the Etzwilen-Singen museum railway.
