history

On June 1, 1909, the station went into operation with the extension of the Bernina Railway from Pontresina via Morteratsch . On July 5, 1910, the gap from the Bernina Pass via Alp Grüm to Poschiavo was closed. The line was electrified from the start. A civil servants' residence from 1912 according to plans by the architect Nicolaus Hartmann and the transformer station have been preserved from the time the station was built . The station originally had the official German name, Berninahospiz .

The station building was also expanded in 1925 according to plans by Nicolaus Hartmann. The covered turntable, which was also built in the course of the station extension, is also based on his designs. Hartmann also planned the building of the next station on the Bernina Railway, Alp Grüm.

Investments

The station ensemble, consisting of a reception building with a restaurant, converter station, civil servants' residence and coach house, forms the "Bernina Hospice Ensemble, which is important in terms of railway history". The station building is a neoclassical building with a triangular gable facing the tracks, giving the building a special width. The building consists of two floors and a gable roof with side projections . The appearance of the building is characterized by the use of rubble stone materials for the design of the facade.

In the southern part of the station area there is an ensemble of a civil servants' residence from 1912, a transformer station and a shed with a turntable, also by Nicolaus Hartmann. The civil servants' residence is built in the Engadine style with an asymmetrical shape and has an outside staircase with a brick parapet. An extension had been structurally prepared, but was not realized. To the northwest of the reception building there is a flat-roofed building, which was probably built in the 1930s as a workers' house for the power plant on Lago Bianco and which was influenced by the New Building ; A flat-roofed building below the coach house served as the power station's pumping station.

The station has three continuous tracks; The turntable is located in the southern part of the station. The station building is to the east of the tracks and houses a restaurant with overnight accommodation.
