The BDhe 4/8 is a rack-and-pinion rail car operated by the Wengernalpbahn (WAB). In 1988 the WAB procured the four two-part double railcars BDhe 4/8 131-134.
history
In 1988 the companies SLM and ABB delivered four BDhe 4/8 131-134 double multiple units to the Wengernalpbahn. The new cogwheel double multiple units were based on the basic concept of a double multiple unit developed by SLM with the wheel arrangement (1A) (1A) + (1A) (1A), which was supposed to bring more passenger comfort and more capacity on Swiss private and branch lines. This also made it possible to use a double traction. The new WAB railcars were supposed to cope with the increased number of passengers on the Grindelwald - Kleine Scheidegg route together with the older railcars. They contributed to the development of faster and easier operations on the entire route of the WAB and to increasing passenger comfort. Although the BDhe 4/8 were not used to replace the BDhe 4/4 119–124 and BDhe 4/4 101–118 , they displaced the older railcars on the Kleine Scheidegg - Grindelwald route into replacement and repeater services. In addition, the new railcars also introduced the new yellow-green color scheme of the Wengernalp Railway . In 2010, destination indicators were installed in all double railcars.
technology
The BDhe 131–134 are pure rack rail cars. They feed 1500 V direct current via their two single-arm pantographs , which are each mounted individually on a part of the double railcar. The axle arrangement is 2'z2'z + 2'z2'z with a total axle distance of 27,050 mm. The railcars each have 4 4MHe traction motors. The hourly output is 804 kW. They each have an impeller with a diameter of 728 mm and a drive gear with a diameter of 637 mm in both halves. The 31,160 mm long railcars have a car body width of 2,400 mm. Its service weight is 42.4 t.
construction
The BDhe offer 64 seats and a 2.8 m² luggage space for the passengers' luggage. The vehicles are completely high-floor and have a high-floor double swing door on each side and railcar half. In addition, the railcar half with the luggage compartment has a folding swing door on each side, which enables direct access to the luggage compartment.
commitment
After commissioning, the BDhe 4/8 131-134 ran in pairs in double traction, each on the Grindelwald - Kleine Scheidegg and Lauterbrunnen - Kleine Scheidegg section, here together with the Bt 231. As a rule, the vehicles with odd end numbers (131 / 133/231) and those with even numbers (132/134) formed into a composition. In between, the railcars were only used in pairs on the Grindelwald - Kleine Scheidegg section. The control car Bt 231 was procured from SLM together with the railcars 131-134 and was in principle a non-motorized half railcar with an empty weight of 15 tons and 35 seats. It remained a one-off and was scrapped after delivery of the articulated control car 251-253, which weighed only 14 tons and had 68 seats.
Today, two BDhe 4/8 coupled with a Bt 251-252 drive two circuits between Lauterbrunnen and Kleine Scheidegg .
