The BDhe 4/4 (until 1982 ABDhe) is a four-axle rack-and-pinion rail car operated by the Wengernalpbahn (WAB). Between 1947 and 1964, WAB purchased a total of 18 pieces.

history

In the mid-1920s, the WAB dealt with the procurement of new, high-performance rack-and-pinion railcars. But the outbreak of war and the resulting loss of income did not allow these to be procured until 1945. WAB ordered a total of 11 high-speed ABDhe 4/4 101–111 rack-and-pinion railcars from SLM and BBC . These were the first passenger vehicles with a central aisle in the WAB car. As early as 1961, WAB ordered seven more ABDhe 112–118. This procurement should now replace all locomotive hauled trains and thus usher in the age of shuttle trains. All rack-and-pinion railcars, on the other hand, were built as facility railcars according to earlier planning. This made the procurement of control cars necessary. Therefore, from 1962 control cars were procured (see also the control car of the Wengernalp Railway ). But it was only after the railcars were converted to shuttle train operation in 1964 that the ABDhe 4/4 could finally be operated with a control car. In 1982, 1st class was removed from all railcars, so they were called BDhe 4/4 101–118.

In 1998 some railcars were partially modernized and received remote-controlled doors and radio remote control. At the end of April 2005 the redundant BDhe 4/4 105 went together with the Bt 225 to Wilderswil to the Schynige Platte Railway . Here it was used for test purposes for the procurement of new railcars for the Schynige Platte Railway. But in August of the same year, a flood damaged the railcar so badly that it was no longer roadworthy and was no longer repaired. So the BDhe 4/4 105 was scrapped. Also in 2005, its sister railcar 103, which was made redundant by the new Bhe 4/8 141-144, was retired . In 2005, railcar 104 was converted with three-phase current equipment for test purposes.

technology

The BDhe 4/4 101–118 are direct current rack and pinion railcars with the Riggenbach rack and pinion system . The 15.7 m long railcars have a top speed of 25 km / h and a service weight of 23.5 t. Their impeller diameter is 670 mm and their pinion gear diameter is 573 mm. The Bauert is 2 'zz 2' zz with a total of four axles. Some of the railcars have radio remote control and remote-controlled doors.

construction

The BDhe 4/4 have a total of 38 seats, exclusively in 2nd class. They also have a luggage space of 2.60 m² for the passengers' luggage. A double door on each side enables quick passenger changes. In addition, there is a sliding door on both sides in the part of the railcar on the valley side, directly behind the driver's cab, which enables direct access to the luggage compartment.

commitment

First the BDhe 4/4 101–118 drove on the Grindelwald - Kleine Scheidegg section together with the control car and replaced the locomotive hauled trains there. This was followed by short guest performances between Lauterbrunnen and Kleine Scheidegg. The BDhe 4/4 were also used as additional trains at larger events in Wengen, such as the Lauberhorn race . From 2005, the railcars practically only drove additional trains with high passenger volumes in the summer and winter seasons, primarily from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg. In 2012, they mainly handle the entire freight traffic on the Grindelwald side and, together with two (Lauterbrunnen side) or one (Grindelwald side) control car, drive additional and extra trains on the entire WAB route network.
