M13 (bear)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

M13 (* 2009 in Trentino ; † 19 February 2013 in the canton of Graubünden ) was a brown bear equipped with a tracking device from Trentino (Italy) who had lived in the Alpine region of Italy , Austria and Switzerland since 2010 . M13 was the sixth or seventh bear to immigrate to Switzerland.

Life

siblings

M13 had two littermates , M12 and M14, who died in traffic accidents in 2012. M12 was run over on an expressway between Merano and Bozen in Italy, M14 died in an accident on Brennerstraße, near the Italian city of Klausen .

Immigration to Switzerland

In April 2012 the brown bear from South Tyrol came to the Lower Engadine and was immediately caught by rangers and given a transmitter collar as a "conspicuous bear". In May 2012, M13 was hit by a train, but survived the accident.

In April 2012, the bear caused major media coverage for the first time after knocking over a tree near Spiss that fell on a power pole, causing a fire. When the search for M13 started, the police found a body. M13 was then referred to in media reports as "Inspector Bear". The dead person was a man from Friedrichshafen from South Tyrol who had been slain with a blunt object. Poison was also found in his blood.

Classification as a risk bear

After he went near settlements, he was classified as a problem bear in November 2012 according to the Bear Switzerland concept , and in February 2013 as a risk bear and thus released for shooting. On February 19, 2013, he was shot dead in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . One of the reasons for this was that the systematic scare-off actions were of no use.

Criticism of the launch

The decision to shoot is u. a. criticized by WWF . The shooting was unnecessary, the decision was made too early. In contrast to JJ3, who was actually a problem bear, M13 showed largely natural behavior . Philip Gehri, spokesman for the WWF explained: “For us, shooting is unnecessary [.] […] Especially with a young male, this behavior can be largely explained at this time of the year. […] M13 was never aggressive. [...] M13 should definitely have been given a chance. "

Preparation of M13

The remains of M13 first came to the Bündner Naturmuseum in Chur. The preparation by M13 has been exhibited in the Museo Poschiavino since 2016.

Conspecifics

Other bears will probably follow in the footsteps of M12, M13 and M14, because the population in Trentino is growing steadily and is estimated at around 30 bears. The animals come from the “Life Ursus” resettlement project in the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park .
