Starting position

The freight train 41094 loaded with groceries from Italy was traveling north near the train station Othmarsingen , Canton Aargau , Switzerland . He was pulled by Re 6/6 11674.

The night express train 295 was approaching in the opposite direction. It was traveling from Dortmund via Basel with more than 500 mainly German and Italian travelers to Rimini. Many passengers wanted to spend their vacation in the south.

At that time, the section between Othmarsingen and Brugg was only built on a single lane. The exit from the Othmarsingen station, at the same time the entrance to the single-lane section of the line , was secured by a signal that indicated "stop" for the locomotive driver of the freight train. The safety system at Othmarsingen station was designed for the transition to the single-lane line so that two trains could approach it from opposite directions at the same time without the train safety triggering a warning or an emergency brake . The entrance to the single-lane route was also not secured by a safety switch .

The locomotive driver of the freight train drove past the signal showing "Halt" while the express train passed the entrance switch. The freight train drove him into the flank. The seven passenger cars at the end of the express train were separated from the front part of the train, derailed and were thrown off the rails . Three full cars overturned, two more were slashed at the side.

consequences

In the accident, three German and three Italian nationals were killed, among them there was also a child. 100 more people were injured, 29 of them seriously.

The heavily damaged Re 6/6 11674 at the head of the freight train could be restored.
