Wasserauen is a place in the Schwende district in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden in Switzerland.
The settlement consists of only a few courtyards and otherwise only appears through the train station and the cable car station of the Wasserauen – Ebenalp cable car and the excursion car park .
Wasserauen is end point of the railway line Gossau SG-Wasserauen the Appenzellerbahn and the base terminal of a cable car, which on the to Alpsteingebirge belonging Ebenalp leads.
The water meadows are the landing area for paragliders taking off from Ebenalp and the starting point for hikes to Seealpsee , Ebenalp, Äscher , Wildkirchli and Säntis .
The Seealpsee-Wasserauen small hydropower plant supplies around ten percent of Innerrhoden with environmentally friendly electricity. After it went into operation in 1905, electric lights were on for the first time in Appenzell .
