List of railway accidents in Austria
The list of railway accidents in Austria contains a chronological list of accidents on Austrian railways in which the loss of human life was to be deplored or considerable damage was caused. If not specifically mentioned, it was trains of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB).
Compared to road traffic, the railway is considered very safe, but accidents cannot be ruled out here either. The Indusi train control system was introduced in Austria in 1963 to avoid collisions. Investigation results of the Federal Security Investigation Agency (SUB) can be viewed - for events in 2008 and later - on the website of the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT).

On the return trip, the driver of the second train had to stop to repair the locomotive. The engine driver of the third train also had to stop on the way to tighten some screws. He tried to make up for the delay and no longer paid attention to the necessary safety distance from the train ahead. At the Vranovice station , he hit the train in front, smashing two cars of the second train and damaging the "Gigant" locomotive and the front car of the third train. The collision left 60 injured.

The use of the electric brake on the locomotive has increased the longitudinal forces in the train. The derailment led to the review of the braking regulations for freight trains with G and P brakes .
- Kritzendorf, Lower Austria - CityShuttle collides with a freight train
- On March 26, 2009 , a four-part push - pull train crashed sideways into a coal- laden freight train at the Franz-Josefs-Bahn station in Kritzendorf . - Braz, Vorarlberg - derailment of a car transport train
- On June 16, 2010, a freight train traveling downhill on the Arlbergbahn between Hintergasse and Braz , which consisted of ÖBB 1116 173 and 16 loaded car transporters, derailed . Due to a brake failure, the train reached a speed of 125 km / h before it derailed. The locomotive and 13 wagons fell off the railway line and some of them ended up in the immediate vicinity of residential buildings . The engine driver was seriously injured. The cause of the accident was a loosened safety rope of the brake clutch between the two parts of the first car. As a result, the brake clutch sagged and was knocked off, kinking an air hose and preventing the rear part of the train from braking . In addition, the driver also pressed the emergency stop button in accordance with the regulations, which switched off the main switch and lowered the pantograph, which meant the failure of the electric brake of the locomotive, which at least reduced the acceleration. The locomotive was replaced by a second occupation of the ÖBB 1116 173 (reserve box).

- On January 21, 2013 , two fully occupied 4024 sets of the suburban line S45 collided on the single-track section of the Vienna S-Bahn between Hütteldorf and Penzing . 8 passengers and one of the two train drivers were seriously injured, 40 passengers and the other train driver were slightly injured. Due to a malfunction of the track vacancy detection system in the Hütteldorf train station, the license to drive the train to Penzing was given with the substitute instead of the exit signal . In such a case, the self-parking operation at Penzing station would have had to be switched off to prevent oncoming journeys . The continued active self-setting led to an automatic setting of a route for the train traveling in the opposite direction. The dismantling of the second track between Hütteldorf and Penzing, the outdated and unclear safety system in Penzing and the overload of the dispatcher’s duties had contributed to the collision. A new set of 4024 101 was formed from the two damaged units, and a series 4023 train was extended to 4024 129 with an excess intermediate car. The remaining three vehicle parts have since been stored at the Vienna Jedlersdorf plant.
