Kaprun glacier lift 1

The Kaprun 1 glacier lift is a three-section cable car that went into operation on December 12, 1965. With the Schmiedingerkees and Maurerkees glaciers opened up in this way, the Kitzsteinhorn was the first glacier ski area in Austria.

Section 1 and 2

The cable car was put into operation on December 12, 1965. The lowest section from the Kapruner Thörl to the Salzburger Hütte was 2028 meters long with an altitude difference of 970 meters. The second section of the cable car, which led past the Krefelder Hütte to the Alpincenter, began in the Salzburger Hütte with a difference in altitude of 554 meters.

The second section of the large-cabin aerial cableway was replaced in 1990 by a new 4-seater chairlift (Langwiedbahn), the first section in 1991 by a new 8- seater cable car (Panoramabahn).

Section 3

Formerly the tallest cable car pillar in the world

The Kaprun 3 glacier lift is the third section of the cable car up to the Kitzsteinhorn that went into operation on November 26, 1966 . It was built by the companies Elin, Waagner-Biro and Swoboda and was designed as a large cabin lift with two cabins (capacity for 60 people each). It leads from the Alpincenter valley station at 2,453 meters above sea level to the Kitzsteinhorn NW-Grat station at 3,029 meters above sea level . The length of this track is 2208 meters, the maximum gradient 42%. The journey time is 8.5 minutes and the top speed is 36 km / h.

The Kaprun 3 glacier lift has two spans, divided by the highest cable car pillar in the world until the Ha Long Queen cable car was built in Vietnam . This is a 113.6 meter high steel framework construction, which is based on a square concrete block with a side length of 17 meters, which is located on a rock tooth. The construction consists of a central steel tube with a diameter of 2.2 meters, which houses a maintenance elevator and a ladder . This tube is supported by eight parabolic steel struts with a diameter of 500 millimeters. These struts are connected to the central tube every 10 meters. The column was initially 103 meters high. Since then it has been increased twice, first to 106.9 meters and finally to 113.6 meters. Construction began and was completed in 1966.

Kaprun glacier lift 2

The Gletscherbahn Kaprun 2 (GBK 2) was a funicular that went into operation on March 23, 1974 after around 2½ years of construction. This railway had the unusual track width of 946 millimeters and was 3900 meters long, of which 3300 meters were in the tunnel. The first 600 m led over a bridge. The average gradient was 411.4 ‰, the maximum gradient 500 ‰.

The two trains were rare three-car units on funiculars and were named "Gletscherdrachen" and "Kitzsteingams". Each unit was 29 meters long, the car width was 1.80 meters. 180 people could get from the valley station to the Alpincenter by train in about 8½ minutes ( 47 ° 12 ′ 31 ″  N , 12 ° 41 ′ 20 ″  E, coordinates: 47 ° 12 ′ 31 ″  N , 12 ° 41 ′ 20 ″  E ) to get promoted. The Alpine Center is located at an altitude of 2,450 m. The maximum speed was 10 m / s (36 km / h). In 1994 the car bodies were renewed and modernized. The route of the funicular railway was single-track with an Abtsch siding in the middle of the route. The middle station “Breitriesenalpe”, which can also be reached by ski, was located in the area of the passing point. Below the Salzburger Hut , the ski slope ended in front of a tunnel that you could ski down to the middle station. With the shutdown of the funicular after the fire in 2000, the ability to use the tunnel also ended.

In the fire disaster on the Kaprun 2 glacier lift on November 11, 2000, 155 people were killed by smoke inhalation, including the train driver and a tourist in return, as well as three people at the mountain station. Since then, the tunnel has only been used for various supply lines and has been tightly closed since the accident. After the concession for the facility expired in 2014, all parts of the valley station and the 600 m long steel bridge were finally dismantled.

Gletscherjet 1 - 4

On December 23, 2001, Gletscherjet 1 , a Funitel , and on October 19, 2002, Gletscherjet 2 , a monocable gondola , opened. Both lifts serve as a replacement for the Kaprun 2 funicular railway. Their route runs parallel to sections 1 and 2 of the Kaprun 1 glacier railway. In spring 2014, construction of the Gletscherjet 3 and Gletscherjet 4 began and was completed in autumn 2015.

Others

Even if the Kitzsteinhorn is basically a year-round ski area , due to climate change, skiing had to be suspended for several weeks during a hot summer for the first time in 1986. Since 1999 there have also been snow cannons on the Kitzsteinhorn , which in particular cover the area between the Alpine Center and the lower edge of the glacier. In 2004, foils against melting snow were applied for the first time.
