The company was founded shortly after the Second World War in Oberweis by Josef Swoboda as "Traunsteinwerkstätten Josef Swoboda". Initially, the focus was on body scrubbing. This business area was expanded in the 1970s as part of a collaboration with Rosenbauer International AG to include the construction of bodies for fire fighting vehicles.

Cable car cabins have also been built since 1956. Since then, more than 100 gondola lifts and well over 250 aerial tramway and funicular systems have been equipped with cabins, and the first ascent aids (for example the Zistlalm lift near Salzburg) were planned and built a little earlier.

At the end of the 1960s the "Traunsteinwerkstätten Josef Swoboda" were renamed (the) "Swoboda Traunsteinwerkstätten". This name lasted for years and is written on all yellow enameled factory plates. The exact company name can also be found on many pillar signs.

From Swoboda Traunsteinwerkstätten to SSG

After detachable cable car systems gradually became established by other manufacturers, the Swoboda Traunstein workshops were also thinking of such a system. The know-how for this was obtained from Switzerland - the dome technology came from the Städeli company, with which the Swoboda Traunsteinwerkstätten entered a special company structure. The knowledge of Städeli (WSO) as well as the system design and the sales department from the Swoboda Traunstein workshops were incorporated into the new company SSG (Swoboda Seilbahnbau Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung) - manufacturing and assembly continued to be the responsibility of the Swoboda Traunstein workshops. This corporate reorganization happened in 1984, and a few systems (Hössbahn, Grafenbergbahn, Jagerspitzbahn, Hösskogel etc.) were planned and sold by SSG, then produced and installed by Swoboda Traunsteinwerkstätten. The change in conditions was also reflected in the signage of the facilities - although the name Swoboda with the classic round lettering and Swoboda S is present, however, "Seilbahnbau Gesellschaft MBH" is also written; "System Städeli" for detachable lifts.

This company structure worked well until the autumn of 1986, when Swoboda Traunsteinwerkstätten had to file for bankruptcy; now the remaining departments have also been taken over by Swoboda Seilbahnbau Gesellschaft mbH and a new company headquarters have been moved into Regau. At the new production site, a new type of ropeway was worked on, the group orbit, and the first system was installed on the Kasberg. In addition, the construction of other types of systems continued. The change in ownership was reflected in the system signs - from now on there is a sign with the inscription "SSG" on every system built.

From SSG to Garaventa and more history

At the beginning of the 1990s, Städeli was taken over by Garaventa. From then on, the location in Regau was used by Garaventa. Garaventa Austria finally merged in 1996 with the traditional Austrian company Girak to become Girak-Garaventa; From now on, what was left of Swoboda was responsible for the construction of armchairs for Girak-Garaventa, from then on cable cars were produced in Korneuburg near Vienna in the former Girak factory. Garaventa finally merged with Doppelmayr in 2002 to form the Doppelmayr / Garaventa Group .

Until 2001, the Swoboda group also included the “Automobile Swoboda” car dealership with branches at the same location and in Timelkam .

In the aftermath of the fire disaster on the Kaprun 2 glacier railway in 2000, members of the Swoboda company, who had built the two trains for the funicular, were also investigated. The proceedings ended in acquittals. However, Swoboda's responsibility remained controversial as a result.

Carvatech

On September 1st, 2005, Swoboda Seilbahnbau GmbH was renamed Carvatech. The company was taken over by new owners in April 2001. The name CARVATECH refers to the current managing partners ( CAR osserie V ockenhuber A schauer). In today's company information (Internet, brochures, etc.) reference is made to the long tradition of the company, but the name "Swoboda" is not used at all.

With the restructuring of the ownership structure, the Carvatech administration moved from Oberweis Castle to newly built office space.
