from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the railway accident Sternthal-Pettau derailed on November 5, 1918, military train. At least 63 people died.

Starting position

The sources speak of a " station Sternthal-Pettau" at the Southern Railway . The places Sternthal (today: Kidričevo ) and Pettau (today: Ptuj ) are neighboring places, each with its own train station - but not on the southern line, but on the Pragersko – Čakovec railway branching off from it . However, both routes were operated by the Südbahngesellschaft .

Military train No. 259 was on the way with soldiers returning from the war . The train consisted of a locomotive and 43 two-axle cars .

the accident

On the fourth car of the train came in hot runners on, as a result, a wheel set bearing broke and the car after passing through the station Sternthal on open track derailed. It was dragged along for 100 meters before the clutch broke. After that happened, the rear of the train drove onto the front. The derailed car and another 10 cars were pushed into one another and smashed. The hot runner was probably caused by poor lubrication. Due to the war , only inferior lubricants were available.

consequences

63 soldiers died (according to another source: 80), 121 were also injured (200 according to initial reports), 96 of them seriously.
