Wheelset bearings
The wheelset is stored on the bogie or on the frame of a rail vehicle by the wheelset bearing . Wheelset bearings are also known as axle bearings .
In the case of railway vehicles , the wheels are usually firmly connected to the wheelset shaft because of the sinusoidal motion and thus rotate together. Therefore, one speaks here of wheelset and accordingly of wheelset bearings.
The wheelset bearings transfer part of the vehicle mass as wheelset mass from the springs to the wheelset. They guide the wheelset laterally in the frame and also transfer longitudinal forces when the wheelset is driven or braked.
In terms of design, wheelset bearings are designed as plain bearings or roller bearings . Nowadays, slide bearings are almost only found on museum vehicles because of the significantly higher maintenance costs.

Hot runner
A defective wheelset bearing that has been damaged by thermal overload is called a hot runner . The preliminary stage of the hot runner is the so-called warm runner.
