Achievements in foreign policy

Von Däniken has dealt with fundamental questions of foreign policy in various functions. As head of Political Department I, he was responsible for shaping relations with Central and Eastern Europe in the 1990s. This also included the formulation of Switzerland's Balkan policy.

The foreign policy report from 2000 bears his signature. One of the most important tasks as State Secretary was the preparations for Switzerland's accession to the UN. He also initiated a new round of bilateral negotiations with the EU and accompanied them through to their conclusion. He gave the impetus for the creation of a federal law on civil peacebuilding. He campaigned for the expansion of relations between Switzerland and the USA , which were tarnished in the 1990s. He promoted the creation of a Joint Economic Commission Switzerland / USA as well as the establishment of parliamentary groups in Switzerland and the USA, which take care of the bilateral relations between Switzerland and the USA.

He also took a public position on fundamental questions of foreign policy. In an article published in the NZZaS in October 2003, he investigated the question of power and law in foreign policy. After leaving diplomacy, he continued to deal with foreign policy issues in public.
