The focus of the film is 12-year-old Belle, who loses her mother in a car accident. Her father is overwhelmed with the situation as she withdraws more and more and sends the girl to her grandfather (Peter Coyote). There, however, Belle has the feeling that she is not loved and finally finds someone who understands her in the animals on her grandfather's farm. Dealing with the horses and the dog 'Atticus' help her to get over the accident. But her grandfather does not see living beings in the animals, only money. When he tries to kill one of Atticus' puppies because it does not conform to the ideal of beauty, the situation escalates and Belle runs away from the farm with Atticus and the horse 'Apatchenwind'. After an unsuccessful long search for the three, she is found unconscious by an employee of her grandfather who takes her to a shed near the farm.
When Belle wakes up, she talks to the employee who hid his animals in the shed and thus saved them from dying with her grandfather and decides to keep running away. Shortly after she continued walking, however, she was found by her grandfather.
The vet is also very happy to see Belle again because she sees her as a kind of daughter. When all seems well, a lot of dogs suddenly die in the city and Atticus is also close to death. The feed is poisoned because the temperature in the cold store is not right. When Belle's father and the vet discover the reason for the deaths, the horses on the farm are being fed at the same time, whose feed comes from the same brand as the poisoned dog food. Atticus smells the poison, attacks the staff and bites one of them.
Then he should be put to sleep. It is only at the last moment that Belle and the vet notice that the food is the same brand as the dog food. Atticus, who was already under anesthesia, wakes up a short time later. Belle is overjoyed. And her father and his new great love are very happy too.
In the end, a new animal shelter is opened, sponsored by Belle's grandfather, in which the dogs are not killed after a short time.

The main role in the film is played by Vivien Cardone ('A beautiful Mind'). Jason London, who also took part in 'To Wong Foo', plays her father, who ends up getting together with the vet - played by Vanessa Branch ('Pirates of the Caribbean').
