List of railway accidents in Germany

The list of railway accidents in Germany contains a chronological listing of accidents on the German railways in which the loss of human life was to be mourned, considerable damage was caused or which are worth mentioning for other reasons.

Compared to road traffic, the railway is considered very safe, but accidents cannot be ruled out here either. The Indusi train control system was introduced in Germany from 1934 to avoid collisions. The war-related increased traffic and difficult operating conditions led to increased rail accidents during the two world wars. With the advent of all-steel passenger coaches after the Second World War, passengers are much better protected in the event of collisions than in coaches with wooden superstructures.

The Federal Agency for Railway Accident Investigation (BEU) publishes the results of the accident investigations for events from the year 2000 online on its website.

  • September 9, 1844 - Jerxheim, Braunschweig : In the Jerxheim railway accident, a passenger train derailed between the Jerxheim and Neuwegersleben stations on the Braunschweig – Oschersleben railway line. A switchman or a railway attendant is said to have not tightened a rail sufficiently. Some passengers were injured.
  • January 2, 1846 - Leimen-St. Ilgen, Baden : In the St. Ilgen railway accident , two trains collided on the Mannheim – Karlsruhe line. One person died and 16 others were injured.
  • August 16, 1846 - Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen, Free City of Frankfurt : In the railway accidents in the Mainspitze station in Frankfurt am Main, two trains ran over the end of the line one after the other because the engine drivers had braked themselves. One drove into the subsequent bridge construction site. The locomotive and some wagons crashed. The stoker was killed and one passenger was injured.
  • January 21, 1851 - Avenwedde, Province of Westphalia, Prussia : In the Avenwedde railway accident, the steam locomotive of an express train derailed, fell down a railway embankment and tore the following four wagons with it, which also derailed. At least three people were killed and the accompanying Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia and seven other people were injured.
  • October 28, 1863 - Frankenstein, Palatinate, Bavaria : In the Frankenstein railway accident , a passenger train ran into an approaching freight train. At the end of the freight train there was a baggage car with 50 workers. Seven people died.
  • May 30, 1870 (or shortly before) - Murg, Baden : A single locomotive running on the Hochrheinbahn drove unbraked from behind into passenger train No. 22, which had stopped in Murg , and smashed its last three cars. The source suspects that the engine driver was drunk. One woman died and 28 people were injured, eight of them seriously.
  • June 21, 1871 - Rackwitz, Saxony : In the Rackwitz railway accident , a passenger train and a locomotive collided on the Trebnitz – Leipzig line. 19 people died and 56 others were injured.
  • 1876 ​​- Weidenthal, Pfalz, Bavaria : One person died in a railway accident and several were injured.

1880-1889

  • September 3, 1882 - Hugstetten, Baden : In the railway accident near Hugstetten on the Breisacher Bahn, a train could no longer be braked, so that it derailed. With 64 fatalities, this was the worst railway accident in the first 100 years of German railway history.
  • September 2, 1883 - Berlin-Steglitz, Prussia : In the railway accident in Steglitz , a crowd of people crossed a track on which an express train from Berlin to Magdeburg was passing at the same moment. At least 39 people died.
  • November 14, 1884 - Hanau, Hesse-Nassau Province, Prussia : In the Hanau railway accident, a passenger train ran into a freight train because the train was not reported by telegraph. A freight train running in the opposite direction drove into the rubble afterwards. 22 people died and 26 were injured.
  • July 1, 1886 - Würzburg, Bavaria : In the Würzburg railway accident , two trains collided head-on between Schweinfurt and Würzburg due to insufficient communication between the dispatcher and a switchman. 18 people died.
  • July 7, 1889 - Röhrmoos, Bavaria : In the Röhrmoos railway accident, at an unscheduled intersection at the Röhrmoos station on the Munich – Ingolstadt line, a passing express train hit a stub track and hit a group of parked freight cars. Ten people were killed five more seriously and 19 slightly injured. After the freight wagons were parked, the switch was not reset.

1890-1899

  • April 9, 1890 - Frankfurt am Main, Prussia : A train manned by workers from Mörfelden-Walldorf derailed early in the morning near the Goldstein station (today: Frankfurt am Main Stadium ), several cars overturned and wedged. Two passengers died and 68 people were injured, 18 of them seriously.
  • May 22, 1891 - Kirchlengern, Westphalia Province, Prussia : In the Kirchlengern railway accident , a passenger train collided with a circus train. Four people died and 15 others were injured.
  • September 19, 1895 - Oederan, Saxony : In the Oederan railway accident on the Dresden – Chemnitz railway line, a military train and a passenger train collided. Ten people died and six were injured.
  • May 18, 1897 - Pelm, Rhine Province, Prussia : The railway accident at Pelm on the Eifel line was caused by a train separation. The front part of the train was then stopped in Pelm. The separated cars drove on more slowly with the sliding locomotive and hit the stationary part of the train in the fog. Ten people died in the accident and 40 were injured.
  • August 14, 1897 - Eschede, Province of Hanover, Prussia : On the Hanover – Hamburg line, D-Train 73 derailed due to a track warping caused by a fallen dome tree. Three people died, 17 were also injured, six of them seriously.
  • 13./14. September 1899 - Rohrbach, Bavaria : The central pillar of a bridge over the Isen was washed away during severe floods . When a passenger train drove over the flood bridge , it finally collapsed and tore the entire train into the water. It was only by luck that there were no travelers on the train. Six railway workers were killed.

  • May 15, 1900 - Demmin, Pomerania Province, Prussia : During construction work on a railway bridge over the Peene , it collapsed under the weight of the 214 passenger train because some of the girder bolts had been loosened. The locomotive and tender fell into the water. The chief fitter of the contracted company was killed and six people were also injured.
  • October 7, 1900 - Schlierbach, Baden : Accident between the stations Heidelberg Karlstor and Schlierbach with 9 dead and 140 injured, because an unscheduled passenger train stopped on the open route to end the ticket control and another passenger train hit it.
  • November 8, 1900 - Mühlheim am Main, Hesse : In the Mühlheim am Main railway accident , a passenger train ran into an express train between the Mühlheim am Main and Offenbach am Main stations. The rubble was ignited by the gas from the lighting and caught fire, resulting in twelve dead and four injured. The accident accelerated the introduction of electric lights in passenger coaches.
  • May 9, 1901 - Ludwigshafen, Pfalz, Bavaria : In the railway accident in Ludwigshafen , a locomotive ran over a buffer stop, broke through the front wall of the terminal station and landed in the winter harbor. One dead and two injured were the result.
  • November 28, 1901 - Horrem (Kerpen), Rhine Province, Prussia : During the railway attack near Horrem, a passenger train from Verviers to Cologne derailed because a replaced old track had been laid across the track. The attack left four dead and three seriously injured.

    December 20, 1901 - Altenbeken, Westphalia Province, Prussia : The railway accident at Altenbeken on the Hamm – Warburg line was a rear-end collision in which twelve people died. A Cologne – Berlin express train ran over a runaway horse in the open and came to a stop. Another passenger train started up.
  • May 5, 1902 - Zschortau, Saxony : The Zschortau railway accident was caused by the breakage of a tender axle on the Munich – Berlin night train. After passing through the station, the tender and three passenger cars derailed. Two travelers, including the Bavarian Reichstag deputy Johann Friedel , were killed and seven people injured.
  • November 19, 1902 - Schwarzenfeld, Bavaria : In the Schwarzenfeld railway accident , the D 21 express train ran into a delayed freight train at the Schwarzenfeld station exit on the Regensburg – Hof railway line. Its last four wagons were smashed, two brakemen of the freight train died. The cause was a misunderstood telephone order from the station master to a railway attendant.
  • May 29, 1903 - Drebkau, Brandenburg Province, Prussia : During the railway attack near Drebkau, a passenger train derailed on the Grossenhain – Cottbus line after a drunk man had laid a railway sleeper across the track. The locomotive and three following wagons derailed, with the leading wagon completely smashed. One dead and three seriously injured were the result.

    August 17, 1903 - Rothenkirchen, Saxony : In the Rothenkirchen railway accident on the Wilkau – Haßlau – Carlsfeld narrow-gauge railway, the locomotive and twelve passenger cars on the evening train from Rothenkirchen to Wilkau derailed due to excessive speed. He claimed three dead and thirty injured.
  • December 2, 1903 - Herbolzheim, Baden : In the Herbolzheim railway accident , an express train crashed head-on into a shunting locomotive at Herbolzheim station. The stoker of the express train was killed.

    May 25, 1905 - Schwegenheim, Palatinate, Bavaria : In the railway accident near Schwegenheim on the Speyer – Neustadt local railway, which was then under construction, a train of material was installed due to excessive speed. The engine driver died and a worker suffered a broken arm.
  • August 4, 1905 - Ingolstadt, Bavaria : The express train D 94 Cologne – Munich derailed in the north station when it was passing a switch at significantly excessive speed.   • December 29 or 30, 1906 - Kalscheuren, Province of the Grand Duchy of Lower Rhine, Prussia : The Vienna-Ostend Express crashed into a freight train because the locomotive driver ran over a signal indicating “stop” due to fog.
  • December 30, 1906 - Ottersberg, Province of Hanover, Prussia : The night express train Hamburg – Cologne ran into a shunting freight train in the Ottersberg railway accident because the engine driver ran a signal showing "stop" due to fog.

  • October 28, 1908 - Stuttgart, Wuerttemberg : In the railway accident in Stuttgart , the delayed D 38 from Berlin to Zurich ran over the buffer stop and only came to a stop in the rail post office. An employee was injured there.
  • October 28, 1909 - Züllichau, Brandenburg Province, Prussia (today Sulechów, Poland): In the Züllichau railway accident , freight train 540 traveled the Züllichau – Wollstein (Wolsztyn) line and hit a car on a level crossing. It is the earliest collision between a motor vehicle and a train with fatalities documented in the literature.

  • July 30, 1918 - Zantoch, Province of Brandenburg, Prussia (today Santok, Poland): In the Zantoch railway accident on the Prussian Eastern Railway, the breaking piston rod of a steam locomotive damaged the track in the opposite direction that the D 22 was currently traveling on.   • November 4, 1918 - Bous (Saar), Rhine Province, Prussia : The railway accident in Bous (Saar) caused an explosion and fire in a passenger train between Völklingen and Bous. 14 people died and 13 others were injured.
  • October 24, 1919 - Kranowitz, Province of Upper Silesia, Prussia (today Krzanowice, Poland): In the Kranowitz railway accident at the former German border station at Kranowitz, a passenger train coming from Czechoslovakia hit the flank of a freight train locomotive that had moved too far. In the aftermath of the March fighting, an express train between Leipzig and Halle was derailed on May 16, 1921, killing five people.
  • June 27, 1922 - Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, Prussia : In the railway accident at Berlin Schönhauser Allee , numerous passengers on the outside on the running boards of a train with compartment cars of the Berlin Ringbahn fell off the train. At least 45 people were killed.

  • August 22, 1922 - Wendelsteinbahn, Bavaria : A Wendelsteinbahn locomotive derailed in the gallery in the “Raindlerkessel”. The following cars crashed into the overturned motor vehicle. One passenger died and around 30 people were injured.
  • 1923 to 1924 - Ruhr area, occupied by France and Belgium : During the Ruhr occupation , there were a large number of rail accidents and assassinations.
