Railway accident in Hanover-Anderten

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hanover-Anderten railway accident was a head-on collision between a freight train and a passenger train on December 9, 1997 near Hanover-Anderten . 51 people were injured and several tank cars loaded with diesel fuel caught fire.

Starting position

The KC 72221 freight train coming from Hamburg , a block train made up of 22 tank wagons loaded with more than 250,000 liters of diesel , was on its way to Kassel on the Hanover freight bypass . In the opposite direction, coming from the Hanover – Braunschweig railway line , the RE 5354, occupied by around 300 passengers , drove from Hanover main station to Celle .

the accident

The locomotive driver of the freight train confirmed with the vigilance button that he had heard the distant signal showing "expect stop" . Instead of using the brakes, however, he accelerated his train and drove over the main signal showing “Halt” at 85 km / h . The inductive train protection (INDUSI) then triggered an emergency brake . However, the only 250 m long slip path was no longer sufficient to bring the train to a standstill before it got into the route of the approaching regional express. At 4:53 p.m., both trains collided head-on. The two locomotives wedged together. Three tank cars went up in flames after explosions , and five more were damaged.

consequences

14 passengers and the driver of the passenger train were seriously injured, 35 other passengers suffered minor injuries. As a result of the collision, several tank cars loaded with diesel caught fire. The damage caused by the accident was estimated at 13 million DM .

The difficult-to-access terrain at the scene of the accident made it difficult for the rescue workers to be deployed. Around 400 people from the police , fire brigade and technical relief organization from Ronnenberg , Langenhagen , Hanover and Lehrte were on duty. The extinguishing water had to be brought in from a distance. After the fire was extinguished by the fire brigade after two hours, the remaining heating oil was pumped out of the burned-out tank wagons. The clean-up continued until the morning of December 15th.
