Hanover – Minden railway line
The Hanover – Minden railway line is one of the most important railway lines in Lower Saxony and Germany . It connects the Lower Saxony state capital Hanover via Wunstorf , Stadthagen and Bückeburg with Minden , Osnabrück , Amsterdam and the Ruhr area . On the Seelze – Wunstorf section, the line runs parallel to the Hanover freight bypass .
history
Construction and operation
The line was opened on October 15, 1847 by the Royal Hanover State Railways ; it mainly opened up the Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe and its residential city of Bückeburg and established a continuous connection from Hanover to the Rhineland. On December 12, 1847, the Wunstorf – Bremen railway line branching off at what was then the Wunstorf island station was opened. Since then, it has also been one of the most important railway lines in Germany in its entire history, as it connects the ports of Bremen with southern Germany . Other connecting and connecting lines are or were the railway town of Hagen-Stolzenau , the railway Nienburg-Minden , the Cologne-Minden trunk line as a continuation of the route to the Rhineland, the railway Rinteln-Stadthagen , the Minden Museum Railway and the Bad Eilsener Small train from Bückeburg to Bad Eilsen and briefly via the suburb of Meißen to Minden .
With the reorganization of the traffic after reunification, this east-west railway line is one of the most heavily used railway lines of Deutsche Bahn (more than 100,000 trains in 2005).
The route between Wunstorf and Minden has been classified as an " congested railroad " since 2012 .
Accidents
On September 6, 1923, following the mistake of a block attendant, the D 10 from Berlin to Cologne at Seelze-Lohnde on the holding D 138 from Leipzig to Amsterdam. 18 people died and 19 were injured.
On January 4, 1943, the engine driver of the SFR 2304 in front of Wunstorf failed to see a signal indicating a “stop” during a heavy snowstorm and drove onto the D 8. 25 people died and 169 others were injured. Lower Saxony's economic and transport manager Kurt Finkenwirth was one of the fatalities .
On May 19, 2016, an ICE between Wunstorf and Haste collided with an eruption on the wing rail of a test frog that had not withstood the dynamic loads of rail operations. There was property damage to infrastructure and vehicles.

Expansion to the high-speed route
The first Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan (1973) introduced the upgraded line Dortmund, Hanover and Braunschweig as a scheduled eight expansion projects in the field of railways. The project was also included in the 1980 Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan.
In 1984, operations began in a 23.5-kilometer section between Bückeburg and Haste at a scheduled speed of 200 km / h. In 1985 a 13.0 kilometer section between Hanover and Wunstorf followed. This means that the 6.9 km long section between Haste and Wunstorf is not designed for 200 km / h.
New Bielefeld – Hanover line
A new high-speed line from Bielefeld to Hanover is to run largely along federal motorway 2 and be accessible at 300 km / h. It is necessary to implement the Germany cycle as part of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 .

The axis between Wunstorf and Minden has not yet been expanded to four tracks.

After the completion of the expansion of the Minden - Hamm line, further construction was planned as early as the 1920s. Only with reunification did the route come into focus again. In the Federal Railways Expansion Act of November 15, 1993, the line was mentioned as a new measure in urgent need . The expansion was mentioned again in the 2003 Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan. The investment master plan published in 2007 for the federal transport infrastructure up to 2010 did not include an expansion. In the demand plan review published in November 2010, the expansion was postponed due to a benefit-cost ratio of less than 1. Under these conditions, the route extension was not eligible for funding. Instead, traffic should develop on the Löhne – Hildesheim – Braunschweig routes . Against this decision there was a resolution of the regional council of the Detmold district government , which expected the route expansion to be taken into account in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 .
In 2010, the federal government estimated the construction costs according to the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003 for the four-track expansion of around 900 million euros.
The draft of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 included a new double-track line between Letter and Lindhorst, from there an extension by two more tracks to Echtorf and a new line between Echtorf and Porta Westfalica including a tunnel through Jakobsberg. Between Porta Westfalica and Letter, the new tracks were to be designed for 230 km / h, the Porta-Westfalica - Löhne section for a maximum of 180 km / h. This should save 10 minutes.
planning
A four-track expansion of the line, as on the connecting Hamm – Minden railway to the west, is still planned. However, it is still controversial whether the existing route should be expanded continuously or whether Wunstorf should be bypassed with a new line from Seelze to Haste, west of Haste the existing line is to be expanded. In the Third Act on the Amendment of the Federal Railways Expansion Act of 23 December 2016, the expansion is included as No. 13 in Urgent Need , but not reported as a bottleneck removal. The following is noted: "Without the Seelze-Süd crossing and without the Jakobsberg tunnel, provided that the shortened travel time of eight minutes required for a German cycle is expected."
In its regional spatial planning program, the Hanover region has determined to expand the Seelze - Wunstorf section to improve the overall range of S-Bahn services. The financing is still unclear.
Transport offer
Intercity Express , Intercity , Regional Express trains and S-Bahn trains run along the entire continuously electrified route . There is also a dense freight traffic . RE trains (Braunschweig - Bielefeld or Rheine) run every hour between Minden and Hanover as railcars operated by the Westfalenbahn railway company and S-Bahn trains on the S1 line (Haste-Hanover-Minden). In the Wunstorf – Hannover section, the S-Bahn traffic is concentrated by the S2 Haste – Hannover – Nienburg line . This route is also used by RE trains on the Hanover - Bremen - Norddeich Mole line.
Between Haste and Hanover the tariff of the Greater Hanover Transport (GVH) applies, the district of Schaumburg is connected to the GVH via a special time card tariff.
The line has six tracks in the Hanover-Nordstadt – Seelze area, four-track between Hanover Hbf and Hanover-Nordstadt with separate S-Bahn tracks, four-track between Seelze and Wunstorf through shared use of the freight bypass, and two-track in the Wunstorf – Minden area. In this area, freight traffic must therefore repeatedly turn to the sidings in order to allow faster passenger trains to pass.
