Railway accident in Untertürkheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Untertürkheim railway accident was the head-on collision of a locomotive with a passenger train in the Untertürkheim station on November 15, 1923. Twelve people died.

Starting position

A single locomotive, probably a Prussian T 16.1 , was on its way to Heilbronn and drove into the Untertürkheim station . In the opposite direction, the Lz 1431 approached, which only led the 4th class and was en route from Kornwestheim passenger station (from: 5:15 p.m.) to Untertürkheim (at: 5:39 p.m.). Since the individual locomotive had to cross the track in the opposite direction to continue to Heilbronn , the exit signal showed it "Halt".

the accident

The engine driver of the individual locomotive ignored the exit signal and ended up on the track in the opposite direction. Here the locomotive initially covered more than a kilometer without the engine driver noticing anything. Then the trains met and there was a head-on collision.

consequences

Twelve people died and 15 others were injured. The driver was sentenced to 15 months in prison. The court found it aggravating that he had driven more than a kilometer on the track in the opposite direction without noticing anything. The suitability for driving service was denied him.
