Stefan Schmitt-Rink

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stefan Schmitt-Rink (* 1957 in Wiesbaden ; † May 5, 1992 in Marburg ) was a German physicist . He made significant contributions to several areas of theoretical solid-state physics .

Career

Schmitt-Rink studied at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and graduated with a diploma thesis in Hartmut Haug's group . In Haug's group, he then completed his doctoral thesis on the subject of many-particle effects in the optical spectra of direct semiconductors .

After a guest stay at the Grenoble Research Center Institut Laue-Langevin in 1983, he worked at Bell Labs in Murray Hill , New Jersey , from 1985 , first as a postdoc and then as a permanent scientist.

In the summer of 1991 he became a professor at the Philipps University of Marburg , where he succeeded Otfried Madelung .

Stefan Schmitt-Rink died on May 5, 1992 at the age of 35 in Marburg.

Services

In his short career, Schmitt-Rink published over 100 specialist scientific publications, many of them together with experimental physicists.

Schmitt-Rink's work concerns the non-linear optical properties of semiconductors as well as the theory of high-temperature superconductors . In 1985, with his older colleague Philippe Nozières , he published an approach to the description of superconductors that is known today as Nozières – Schmitt-Rink formalism.

The view expressed by his Marburg colleague Ernst O. Göbel and his former teacher Hartmut Haug in their obituary for Schmitt-Rink, whose "ideas and ideas will shape many areas of modern solid-state physics for years to come", changed in the years after Schmitt-Rink Rink's death confirmed. Many of his publications are still important references in the relevant subject areas. Two of Schmitt-Rink's articles on superconductivity, including the one written together with Nozières from 1985, have so far been cited more than 1000 times, and several articles on the theory of nonlinear optical effects in semiconductors have between 500 and over 800 citations on. Schmitt-Rink has an h-index of 57.
