Otfried Madelung

Otfried Madelung (born April 14, 1922 in Frankfurt am Main ; † August 3, 2017 ) was a German physicist specializing in theoretical solid-state physics.

Life

Madelung was the son of Erwin Madelung . From 1946 he studied physics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , where he received his diploma in 1948. He then went to the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Göttingen, where he received his doctorate in 1950 under Werner Heisenberg ( The angular distribution of secondary electrons of the hard component in cosmic radiation ). 1950 to 1959 he was a research assistant at the Siemens-Schuckert works in Erlangen . In 1957 he completed his habilitation in Marburg, where he was a lecturer from 1959. From 1962 until his retirement in 1987 he was professor for theoretical physics (and especially theoretical solid-state physics) at the University of Marburg , where he was director of the institute for theoretical solid-state physics and rector in 1967/68.

Like his father, he dealt with theoretical semiconductor physics , especially band structure calculations . In 1985 he succeeded Karl Heinz Hellwege and was one of the editors of Landolt-Börnstein (semiconductor volumes).

From 1966 he was head of the specialist committee for semiconductor physics of the German Physical Society .

In private, Madelung was also interested in genealogy and in 2002 self-published the local history of the village of Madelungen near Eisenach .
