Ernst Otto Göbel (born March 24, 1946 in Seelbach , Oberlahnkreis ) is a German physicist .

Göbel was President of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig from April 1, 1995 to December 31, 2011 . From 1997 to 2003 he was President of the Comité Consultatif d'Electricité (CCE) and from 1997 to 2012 a member of the International Committee for Weights and Measures ( CIPM ) of the Meter Convention in Paris and its President from July 2004 to the end of 2010. His academic work focuses on solid state physics , in particular semiconductor physics and semiconductor technology, laser physics and laser spectroscopy, and metrology .

Göbel lives in Braunschweig , is married and has two children.

education

Ernst O. Göbel was born in Seelbach, Hesse , in 1946 . After graduating from high school in 1966, he began studying physics and mathematics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . After moving to the physical institute of the University of Stuttgart , he received his doctorate in 1973 with a thesis on the subject of recombination effects at high excitation densities in GaAs and InP under Manfred H. Pilkuhn 's doctorate in natural sciences. He then stayed at the University of Stuttgart as a research assistant and completed his academic training in 1979 with a habilitation and appointment as a private lecturer .

academic career

After completing his habilitation, Ernst O. Göbel moved to the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart as a research assistant , before taking over the chair for experimental solid state physics at the Philipps University in Marburg in 1985 as the successor to Josef Stuke . The main research focus of his time in Marburg was in particular the electronic and optical properties of semiconductors . During this time, an interdisciplinary scientific center for materials research was set up in the physics department, which enables intensive collaboration between physicists and chemists in the field of materials research.

From 1995 to 2011 Göbel was President of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig. Since then he has also been an honorary professor at the Philipps University in Marburg and the Technical University of Braunschweig .

Research abroad

Honors and memberships

In 1990 Ernst O. Göbel was awarded the Max Born Prize of the German Physical Society and the Institute of Physics in London.

In 1991 he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation .
