Manfred H. Pilkuhn

Manfred H. Pilkuhn (born April 16, 1934 in Insterburg ; † October 2, 2015 in Böblingen ) was a German physicist .

Life

After graduating from high school, Pilkuhn studied physics at the Technical University of Braunschweig from 1952 to 1957 with an interim study visit from 1954 to 1955 at Trinity College Dublin with Erwin Schrödinger . During his studies in 1952 he became a member of the Braunschweig fraternity of Thuringia . After the diploma Accounts he remained at the Technical University of Braunschweig and completed his dissertation noise investigations of germanium single crystals at low temperatures of, with which he in 1960 there to the Dr. rer. nat. received his doctorate .

After a research stay at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas in Madrid from 1960 to 1961, Pilkuhn worked from 1961 to 1966 at the IBM research center in Yorktown Heights, New York . In 1966 he completed his habilitation with the text structure parameters of the injection laser at the Technical University of Braunschweig in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering for the subject of electrical engineering and in 1967 also for physics . He was then appointed as an associate professor at the University of Frankfurt am Main (1966–1967) and in 1969 at the University of Stuttgart , where he headed the 4th Physics Institute until his retirement in 2002.

In Pilkuhns Institute with its own semiconductors - Epitaxielaboren and a clean room for nano-structuring work to have semiconductor physics , semiconductor technology and optoelectronics performed.

Pilkuhn was co-founder of the Pohl Institute at Tongji University in Shanghai (1979) and since 1980 Consulting Professor at Tongji University there. He was the founder and spokesman of the DFG special research area Molecular Electronics at the University of Stuttgart (1986–1998). In 1981 and 1991 he was Hitachi Chair Professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology , in 1995 he taught at the University of California, Santa Barbara and from 2002 until last as Research Chair Professor at the Cheng Kung National University in Tainan , Taiwan . In 2004 he was professor at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas in Madrid and in 2005 at the Hong Kong Polytechnical University.

Pilkuhn was a member of the boards of trustees and committees of the Center National d'Études des Télécommunications at France Telecom, the RIKEN in Tokyo , the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft , the Volkswagen Foundation and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation .
