Hosena railway accident in 2012

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hosena railway accident in 2012 occurred on July 26, 2012 at 8:20 pm at the Hosena train station in the city of Senftenberg in Brandenburg , when two freight trains collided.

Starting position

Two freight trains belonging to the ITL railway company, which traveled the Węgliniec – Roßlau railway, were involved in the accident . The line has a gradient east of Hosena in the direction of Hosena train station. From here on 39 came trolley existing freight DGS 49325 which of the locomotive 186 was pulled 140 and gravel from Schwarzkollm to a construction site in Rzepin should transport.

A second, unloaded freight , DGS 92505 consisting of 55 freight cars was was from Dresden-Friedrichstadt came and drove straight into the siding of the hard tile plant Koschenberg of Basalt AG in order there also to load gravel.

the accident

The shut-off valve of the main air line of the air brake between the locomotive of DGS 49325 and its first car was closed. A brake test was probably not carried out properly beforehand. As a result, only the braking power of the locomotive itself was available for the entire train , while the cars could not brake. The DGS 49325 then passed almost unchecked the “stop” signal for the Hosena station, then two non-closed level crossings and finally the DGS 92505 in the rear part of the train in the flank . The force of the impact was so strong that the approaching locomotive was thrown off the track , turned 180 degrees against its own direction of travel and overturned. Several freight wagons got wedged and three freight wagons were thrown against the guard's interlocking W3, which then collapsed. Several cars piled on the rubble of the building.

consequences

Immediate consequences of an accident

The 54-year-old switchman who had worked in the destroyed signal box could only be recovered dead after a 17-hour search. The engine driver of the DGS 49,325 was at the collision seriously injured when he jumped off just before the collision of the locomotive. The train driver of the DGS 92505 and the dispatcher Hosena suffered a shock. Of the 94 wagons involved in the accident, 34 were damaged and more than 20 derailed . The damage to the trains was estimated by the ITL at a high single-digit million amount. 250 meters of track , five switches and 3500 meters of overhead contact line were damaged or destroyed. The cost of the accident was estimated by DB Netz AG, as the owner of the railway infrastructure, at a double-digit million figure.

Rescue operation and interruption of the route

A total of 80 rescue workers from Deutsche Bahn, the technical relief organization , the fire brigade and the police were on duty.

As a result of the accident, the railway line was closed and passenger rail replacement services between Ruhland and Hoyerswerda were set up until the clean-up and repair work was finished. The freight trains to the Oßling quarry and to Cunnersdorf were diverted via the Dresden – Radeberg –Kamenz line , the trains to Caminau and to the coal railway network in Spreewitz were directed via Knappenrode, Graustein and Cottbus. The Berlin – Görlitz line reached its capacity limit in the single-track section Graustein – Cottbus.

Repairs

On July 30, 2012, Deutsche Bahn reported that most of the rescue work at the accident site had been completed. The rail connections to the quartz sand works Hohenbocka and Basalt AG were then made passable again. The repair of the route from Ruhland to Hoyerswerda was completed on September 1, 2012. This meant that two of the four tracks at Hosena station were available again and the RE 15 Dresden – Hoyerswerda was able to run again as planned. For the RE 11 Leipzig – Hoyerswerda there was still replacement rail service. Operations on the route to Brieske only resumed in spring 2013. Deutsche Bahn assumed that the complete elimination of all consequences of the accident, in particular the restoration of the signal box, would take several years; The functions of the signal box were temporarily housed in a container .

After only one year of planning and approval - usually five to six years - an electronic interlocking was built in November 2013 to replace the destroyed interlocking and to remove the station's restricted accessibility as a result of the accident. Three level crossings were also renewed and integrated into the new signal box. Commissioning took place on September 29, 2014.

The electronic signal box is dedicated to the signalman Wolfgang K. who died. A bronze plaque on the modular building commemorates him and the accident. At the location of the former signal box W3 there is a wooden cross with the inscription "W3".

Criminal proceedings

The Cottbus public prosecutor launched an investigation against the driver of the approaching train on suspicion of negligent homicide .

In July 2014, the driver was sentenced to nine months probation. He also has to pay a fine. According to the expert opinion, the 64-year-old should not have carried out the prescribed brake test properly before departure, which meant that only the locomotive and not the train could be braked.

Accident 2013

On November 11, 2013, at around 6:30 p.m., another freight train accident occurred in the immediate vicinity of the 2012 accident site. An unloaded block train of open freight wagons of the class Eaos from DB Schenker Rail (today DB Cargo ), hauled by the 155 146 electric locomotive , hit a stationary freight train of the Freightliner railway company , which was loaded with 3,500 tons of grit and was waiting in front of an exit signal . On impact, several cars of the approaching train straightened up, with the front cars coming to a stop on and next to 155 146. The driver of the approaching train was slightly injured, but the colleague at the front of the stationary train was not. The superstructure of the 155 146 was largely destroyed in the accident, so that it could no longer be repaired. The locomotive involved in the accident was scrapped on site on December 18, 2013. As a result of the accident, the route was closed again until November 18. During this time, rail replacement services took place between Ruhland and Hoyerswerda. The Cottbus public prosecutor's office is investigating the station staff on suspicion of negligent bodily harm and endangering rail traffic .

New signal box

A new signal box was opened in November 2014. It controls 48 signals, 36 points and three level crossings and cost over 30 million euros.
