Dinkelscherben railway accident

The railway accident Dinkelscherben on 31 July 1928 was a collision of two trains , caused by a switch - and signal interference . 23 people were killed.

Starting position

The train station of Dinkelscherben located on the Ulm-Augsburg railway . Its signal box for the western entrance to the station was rebuilt. A makeshift signal box controlled the train traffic for so long.

On the afternoon of the day of the accident, the G 7535, traveling in an easterly direction , loaded with empty oil drums, was driven into an overtaking track to enable the following BP 911 from Saarbrücken to Munich to pass through the station. In this, many vacationers traveled to the Alps . The accelerated passenger train did not stop here according to the schedule . It was pulled by the 17 408 steam locomotive .

After the freight train had entered the overtaking track, the dispatcher gave the responsible signal box employee the order to reset the corresponding turnout for the subsequent passage of the passenger train over the through track. The signal box operator pulled the appropriate lever to adjust the route accordingly.

the accident

The signalman now assumed that the route had been properly set. He could have checked this by looking at the switch that was visible to him . But he relied on technology and didn't. He reported to the dispatcher that the route had been set, who then released the entrance. Due to the renovation work on the signal box, neither the switch back to the through track nor the signal dependency on the switch position worked. So it happened that the switch was not reset, but the BP 911 received the signal "Drive free". He was approaching the station at 60–70 km / h. Its engine driver recognized the wrongly set points, triggered an emergency brake , but could not bring the train to a stop before it hit the end of the freight train at around 4 p.m. The passenger train consisted mostly of wagons with a wooden structure that were smashed. The locomotive tipped sideways.

consequences

23 people died: 19 died immediately, 4 died later in hospital. 51 people were injured.

Since there was only one stretcher in the village , the injured were taken with benches and other equipment to the dining room of a nearby inn, where first aid was provided. After an hour the relief train arrived from Augsburg . The injured were gradually taken to the hospitals in Zusmarshausen and Augsburg.

One of the deceased was the priest and teacher Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Götzmann (Rastatt). In an obituary from his school it was said: "He went into eternity to the peace that school cruelty had so often denied him on earth."
