Train accident near Ummendorf

In the railway accident near Ummendorf on June 23, 1928, an express train derailed, injuring 31 people.

history

The express train D 135 pulled by the steam locomotive 18 107 of the 18.1 series (formerly the C series of the Royal Württemberg State Railways) ran on June 23, 1928 on the southern line from Friedrichshafen via Ulm to Stuttgart.

At that time, a single-track operation was set up between Ummendorf and Biberach due to construction work. The line speed was planned to be 100 km / h. The transition in Ummendorf station was approved for a maximum of 45 km / h. As the train passed them at a speed of around 60–75 km / h, the locomotive derailed and came to rest on the embankment across the direction of travel. At least five passenger cars derailed without breaking the couplings and came to an incline on the embankment. 31 people were injured.

The German Red Cross and a relief train pulled by a class 75 steam locomotive (formerly class T 5 of the Württemberg State Railroad) took care of the injured at the scene of the accident and the necessary clean-up work. The rescue work turned out to be very difficult, as no heavy equipment could be brought to the scene of the accident, and it took several days.
