This temporary solution lasted until November 15, 1848, when the first Main-Neckar bridge went into operation. The Mainspitze depot was then abandoned and was the first station to suffer this fate in Frankfurt am Main.

The need to change the direction of travel at Mainspitze station resulted in two major accidents:

  • On the morning of August 16, 1846, the driver of the Darmstadt local train braked himself and drove past the end of the line. The locomotive got stuck in the gravel.
  • In the afternoon of the same day, another engine driver braked himself. His train also drove past the end of the line without braking, albeit with a more dynamic pace: it broke through the site fence, the locomotive and some wagons crashed on the first bridge pillar. The engine driver was able to save himself by jumping off the vehicle , the heater was crushed by a car. A passenger broke his foot as he fell down the bank.
