Railway accident in Bauerwitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the railway accident in Bauerwitz , Silesia , on November 12, 1939 , two passenger trains collided head- on near the town of Bauerwitz (today: Baborów, Poland ) . 48 people died.

Starting position

The Rosengrund station (until 1935 Sakrau - Suckowitz , 1945–1950 Zakrzów , 1950–1977 Zakrzów Opolski, most recently Sukowice) was on the single-track line Cosel – Bauerwitz .

Train P 957 ran in the direction of Heydebreck, the P 950 came from there. The P 957 ran regularly and was slightly delayed, while the P 950 only ran “on request”. When the latter operated, the scheduled train crossing in Rosengrund was planned. Both trains were very busy due to a regional holiday.

the accident

The dispatcher station Rosengrund forgot at check-P 957, that the P reversed and on that day 950 was the P 957 extend, although the return was already on the track. The trains crashed at line speed at around 19:25. A number of wagons wedged together.

consequences

43 or 48 people died in the accident and another 77 were injured. The engine driver of the P 950 survived the accident, but couldn't cope with it mentally: six months later he committed suicide by being run over by a train in Bauerwitz.

The dispatcher was added to 4 years imprisonment convicted. Today a memorial cross on the railway line commemorates the accident.
