Master of the Stockkämper double figure

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A sculptor and carver from Lower Saxony or Westphalia who was not known by name and who was active in the first third of the 16th century is referred to as the master of the Stockkämper double figure . He probably had his workshop in Osnabrück or the surrounding area. The master got his emergency name after the double image of a Maria and an Anna Selbdritt in the church of Stockkämpen near Hörste (Halle) .

The master of Osnabrück was first associated with the work, he had created eight large sandstone apostle statues that stood in the ambulatory of the Osnabrück Cathedral . These are stylistically very close to the figure of Mary. Possibly he worked with one or more assistants, and in order to explain small differences and deviations in style between the figures of the apostles and the figure of Mary, over the years art history has given the master of the Stockkämper double figure an independent emergency name and the master's work from that of the master retired from Osnabrück.
