The railway accident in Gutach (Black Forest Railway) occurred on May 24, 1918 on the Baden Black Forest Railway near Gutach (Black Forest Railway ) when an ammunition train exploded there.

Course of events

On the evening of May 24, 1918, a munitions train traveled from Hornberg to Hausach . It consisted of 18 wagons that carried 15 cm grenades .

The axle of one of the cars suffered an overheating , as a result of which the car started to burn. The staff brought the train to a stop so that it came to a stop at the level of the Joklis farm. The staff was able to escape before the ammunition started to explode . Ammunition and train parts were hurled 800 to 1000 meters by the explosions. The explosions continued until the next morning.

People were not harmed. The Joklis farm, built in 1705, and the neighboring Leibgedinghaus burned down. Buildings more distant were also damaged. There was also great damage to the railway infrastructure and the telephone systems . 11 wagons of the train were completely destroyed.

Rail traffic was interrupted for 2 days. The accident site was cleaned of the remaining ammunition and rubble by soldiers from an infantry regiment . For a long time afterwards, splinters and whole grenades were found in the ground while plowing.
