The class 50.40 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn were steam locomotives of the class 50 converted into a Franco-Crosti locomotive .

Emergence

In 1953, the DB decided again to convert locomotives according to the Franco-Crosti principle. Although the tests with the DB class 42.90 had shown problems with the corrosion of the preheater boiler early on, the principle promised sufficient coal savings to enable a second series of these locomotives to be launched. In 1954 , Henschel converted the 50 1412. It was then tested at the testing office in Minden and in operation at BW Bingerbrück . A coal saving of 22% was found with roughly the same maintenance expenditure. Therefore, from 1958 onwards, the DB had a further 30 class 50 locomotives converted with Henschel boilers ; the conversion was carried out by AW Schwerte . Only locomotives were selected whose boilers had to be replaced anyway because they were made of the non-aging-resistant steel St 47k. In 1958 the test locomotive was redrawn as the 50 4001.

Technical differences

Technically, the locomotives largely corresponded to the class 50. In contrast to the class 42.90, the Franco-Crosti boiler was only equipped with a preheater boiler and thus only an additional chimney. The gas-contacted heating surface of the long boiler was 100.43 m², that of the preheating boiler 94.23 m². Both resulted in a ratio of the heating surfaces of 52% to 48%. The long boiler had a third conical section that encircled the combustion chamber . The locomotives also had a mixer preheater of the type MV 57. The service weight of the vehicles was only increased by 2.1 t compared to the 50 series. 50 4011 received a main oil furnace during the renovation .

The chimney on the front of the smoke chamber was only in operation when the fire was stopped and was closed while driving. During the journey, the exhaust steam with the flue gases was expelled through the second side chimney, which was located on the left side of the heater of the long boiler at the level of the third coupling axis . Visibility problems arose due to swirling smoke, which an attempt was made to remedy using a wind deflector on the roof of the driver's cab.

Because even coal dust from the chimney by the changed position Tender kicked up, the locomotives were tender flaps on the coal box, which should be closed while driving. However, this happened very seldom during operation because the flap actuation was often damaged during filling and also because the coal supply often went over the upper edge of the tender. The tenders were of the standard design 2'2 'T 26 and held 8 tons of coal and 26 m³ of water.

commitment

Initially the locomotives in the depot were Oberlahnstein and Kirchweyhe in operation. From 1962 to 1964, eleven locomotives were located in Bingerbrück . Bw Osnabrück marshalling yard were from 1959 to 1965 six machines stationed.

In 1961, all locomotives had to be taken out of service due to corrosion damage to the preheater drum and the side chimney. For some, the entire preheater drum has been replaced. Flue pipes made of corrosion-resistant chrome steel were installed. However, with these repairs the cost advantage of saving coal was consumed. The steam locomotives were concentrated in Kirchweyhe and ceased to operate by June 1967. No locomotive remained.
