Railway accident in Herne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Herne railway accident on the morning of January 13, 1925 was a rear-end collision between two trains in Herne station . 24 people died.

Starting position

In the area of the Herne train station , after the damage to the railway systems during the Allied occupation of the Rhineland and the government operations carried out during this, new train control systems were installed after the systems were returned to the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft on November 15, 1924 . This was probably done in a great hurry and without the necessary controls.

The P 230 from Dortmund to Wanne stopped at Herne station . His departure there was delayed by three minutes.

It was followed by the D 10 from Berlin to Cologne .

the accident

The staff on the D 10 locomotive found all signals in the "Drive free" position. Since the train was supposed to stop in Herne, the engine driver braked when his train entered the station. When he noticed the end-of-train signal from the P 230, he immediately triggered an emergency brake , which was no longer sufficient to prevent the collision with the passenger train that was just approaching. The last four cars on the passenger train were smashed and two more badly damaged.

consequences

24 people died - two of them later in the hospital - and 91 others were also injured.

The official accident investigation remained vague on crucial points, so that from today's perspective the cause of the accident must be rated as unclear.

Others

Almost 15 years later, the "D 10" route from Berlin to Cologne was also involved in the Genthin railway accident , which is the most momentous German railway disaster to date with over 200 deaths. There, however, "D 10" was the passive, i.e. rammed, opponent in the accident.
