Martine Smeets (born May 5, 1990 in Geesteren) is a Dutch handball player .

Career

Martine Smeets started playing handball at Stevo Geesteren in 1995. In the 2007/08 season she played at E&O Emmen, then the 1.72 meter tall left winger moved to Sercodak Dalfsen, with whom she won the Dutch championship in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and the Dutch cup in 2011 and 2012. From 2013 Smeets was under contract with the German Bundesliga club Thuringian HC , with whom she won the German championship in 2014 and 2015. From summer 2015 she ran for SG BBM Bietigheim . With Bietigheim she won the German championship in 2017. In the summer of 2018 she moved to the Norwegian first division team Molde HK . In January 2020 Smeets was signed by the French first division club Metz Handball , whose regular left winger Manon Houette was injured. She has been under contract with the Romanian first division club CSM Bucharest since summer 2020 .

Smeets is part of the Dutch national team , with which she participated in the 2013 World Cup in Serbia . She also took part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . A year later she won the bronze medal at the 2017 World Cup . With the Dutch selection, she won the bronze medal at the European Championships in 2018 . At the 2019 World Cup , she won the World Cup title in the final against the Spanish selection.
