Scene of the accident in Oberzissen with dumped cargo

In the railway accident in Oberzissen on October 31, 1907, the GmP 10 derailed near Oberzissen on the Brohl Valley Railway due to excessive speed and fell down a railway embankment. Five people died.

Starting position

Due to significant gradients, the meter-gauge Brohl Valley Railway was designed as a rack railway in parts. It belonged to the West German Railway Company .

Train no. 10 was a " mixed train ", at that time a common form of operation on the line. He began his journey in the evening in Kempenich and moved down the valley. It consisted of the gear locomotive , a baggage car , a single passenger cars 3rd class in which 18 people were, and freight cars , the other loaded with stones and potatoes. More loaded freight wagons were attached in Brenk . There were now 10 freight cars in total.

the accident

After departing from Brenk, the train gained increasing speed on a ramp with 50 ‰ without the staff being able to reduce it. When the train began to sway in tight curve radii, a passenger decided to jump off. He broke both of his legs. From the unbraked train, the locomotive and van managed to make the journey over the Oberzissen Viaduct, the remaining wagons tipped off the track and fell down the embankment. The body of the car was completely destroyed. The locomotive and the van were carried out of the next bend, also derailed and overturned.

consequences

Five people died, the train driver and four passengers, others were injured, six of them seriously.

The public prosecutor's office in Koblenz initiated an investigation and arrested the engine driver . On the railway side, the railway supervision in Cologne and the Prussian Ministry for Public Works investigated the accident. It was not possible to determine why the train was not braking properly.
