Leipzig-Leutzsch is a train station in the Leipzig district of Leutzsch . It is located on the Leipzig – Großkorbetha railway line and is seven kilometers by train and ten minutes by car from Leipzig Central Station. In addition, it has been the starting point of the Leipzig – Probstzella railway since 1873 and was the end point of the Merseburg – Leipzig railway from 1931 to 1998 .

history

Former reception building, 2009
Former platforms, 2009

The station was opened on March 22, 1856 with the Thuringian Railway and was initially called Barneck (after the nearby manor Barneck). It was later renamed Leutzsch . After the municipality of Leutzsch was incorporated into the city of Leipzig on January 1, 1922, it was given the name Leipzig-Leutzsch, which is still valid today . With the construction of the line belonging to the Leipziger Güterring, the Leipzig-Leutzsch station received four mechanical signal boxes. In 1931 the line from Merseburg to the station was the last to be introduced.

In 1969 the Leipzig-Leutzsch station became one of the first access points for the Leipzig S-Bahn . In the train of preparation for the S-Bahn operation, the station received light signals in the interlocking areas Lo and Lä, in the interlocking area Ls towards Plagwitz only on the through main tracks. In this context, two electrically remote-controlled turnouts with a branch radius of 1200 meters and a flat crossing with movable double frog tips were installed on the east head. This enabled journeys to and from Leipzig-Plagwitz at 100 km / h.

In the last decade of the 20th century, the station increasingly lost its function as a regional train station. In 1998, travel to Merseburg was discontinued, and the route was closed in early 1999. The line operation on the tram line, which has been running from Leutzsch town hall through Rathenaustraße to the train station since 1899, was discontinued in 2001 by the Leipzig transport company.

Assembly of the central platform with prefabricated parts, 2010

In the course of the extensive reorganization of the S-Bahn traffic in the greater Leipzig area to build up the network of the S-Bahn Central Germany , the travel facilities of the Leipzig-Leutzsch train station and the industrial area West stop were combined to form a new access point on Georg-Schwarz-Straße . A 140 m long island platform was set up between the main tracks on the Leipzig – Großkorbetha line, and two 140 m long outer platforms on the Leipzig – Probstzella line . Stairs and elevators connect this with Georg-Schwarz-Straße, which makes it easier to transfer to the city's bus and tram network . The old platforms were demolished and the tracks were rebuilt in a different location.

Since late 2011, the station is from the operations center remotely Leipzig. The responsible sub-center (UZ) is the UZ Leipzig-Wahren , the corresponding ESTW-A connected to the UZ Leipzig-Wahren is located on site in the Leipzig-Leutzsch train station. The manufacturer of the electronic interlocking is the Thales company .

The new systems went into operation in sections until the opening of the city tunnel in December 2013. Since the station of the line RB 125 is Leipzig HbF Weissenfels and the line S 1 Wurzen-Leipzig Miltitzer Allee the S-track center Germany operated. In December 2015, Abellio Rail Mitteldeutschland took over the regional train services to Weißenfels, which have been linked to Erfurt or Saalfeld since then.

accident

On July 10, 1973, the express train 703 derailed at Leipzig-Leutzsch station due to excessive speed. Because of the tense operating situation, it should not go as planned on the continuous main track 1 of the Leipzig – Großkorbetha line, but instead via track 3, the continuous main track of the Leipzig-Leutzsch – Probstzella line, and be routed back to the Großkorbetha line in the area of the command post. The engine driver noticed the restrictive terms of travel at 100; km / h, travel at 40 km / h expected at the entrance and travel at 40 km / h at the intermediate signal on the west side of the platform and braked late. At a speed of 80 km / h, the locomotive derailed in the switch connection and hit the dispatcher interlocking with full force . The first car also derailed, and the following cars on the express train pushed into one another. The signal box was badly damaged. There were four dead, including the engine driver, and 25 injured. The stoker saved himself with one jump from the locomotive. The damaged signal box building was rebuilt, the newly built side of the building can be recognized by the gray plaster instead of the red brickwork.
