The Leipzig-Leutzsch – Leipzig-Wahren line is a double-track, electrified main line in Saxony , which is part of the Leipziger Güterring . It crosses the northern Leipzig floodplain forest and is mainly used to handle freight traffic in the Leipzig railway junction . Like the entire freight ring, it is nevertheless approved for use by passenger trains. During construction work or to avoid route conflicts, it was also used as planned in the past, for example when the Leipzig Hbf train station was rebuilt for the new integration of the routes to Erfurt , Berlin and Dresden between 2014 and 2018. The longer route leads in conjunction with the shorter one Route speed, however, leads to longer driving times of over ten minutes.

history

The line was built by the Prussian State Railways as part of the redesign of the Leipzig railway junction after the turn of the century. The construction of the line had become necessary because the Leipzig-Wahren station was supposed to accommodate all goods traffic from Thuringia and Magdeburg. Trains from or towards Großkorbetha and Zeitz could from now on be directed past Leipzig without touching the city center. The most important engineering structure on the route is the 656-meter-long Wahren Viaduct , which was built from yellow clinker brickwork and has a total of 26 arches. The line was opened on April 9, 1905.
